Norton Message: Your computer is at Risk - Sonar Protection not fixed

Hello there,

 

Got a problem with NIS.

 

Norton Internet Security stating my System Status is at 'At Risk'.

SONAR protection button is red.

 

After pressing "Fix Now", msg comes up with 'Sonar Protection status not fixed'

 

I've run live update but no changes apparent.I'm running Windows 7 Pro on my laptop.

 

Your advice would be much appreciated..

Hello floplot,

 

Not sure what the product year is but maybe 1997-2010. NIS version is 18.6.0.20.

Did a full system scan and no problems.

I restarted laptop this morning and SONAR protection is magically back to normal, with system status back to 'secure'

 

Do I still need to reinstall program?

Should I and can I download the latest version to avoid this problem in future?

Hi regmean,

 

From the version number you have provided, you have an old version of NIS installed.  The most current version (NIS 2012) is 19.1.1.3.  I do not believe however that anyone will be willing to guarantee that you will avoid this problem in the future.  Chances are very good you will, but no guarantee. :smileywink:

 

I will receive some flack from suggesting this method, as most folks still do not trust or use the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool, however I would like for you to try it and if it doesn't provide you with an error free install, we'll let one of the Guru's supply you with the old method.  So if you are game, try this.

 

If you use Identity Safe,  backup your Identity Safe data: (The NR&R Tool does this as part of it's function, however, due to the critical nature of the information contained in ID safe we would recommend backing that up manually first just as a precaution even though the tool should do this for you.)

  

Follow the instructions for downloading and running the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool

Be sure to read the Before You Begin in the above link.

  

After the program is installed and activated, manually Run LiveUpdate as many times as necessary for it to respond "no more updates available". If a reboot is requested, reboot and then continue to Run LiveUpdate until it responds "no more updates available" and then reboot one last time.

 

If you decide not to try this method, please post back and ask for the old method.

These are the instructions PaupauZ normally posts:

 

1. If you use the feature, please backup your Identity Safe data
2. Download latest Norton Internet Security installer: www.norton.com/nis12  (this is the English one, for other languages please go to the Norton Update Center: www.norton.com/nuc )
3. Download Norton Removal Tool: www.norton.com/nrt
4. Disconnect from internet
5. Remove Norton Internet Security from Start Menu or from Control Panel -> Add or Remove programs
6. Reboot
7. Run the Norton Removal Tool, reboot (repeat it 2-3 times)
8. Install Norton Internet Security 2012

9. Reconnect to the internet
10. Activate it with your serial
11. Run Live Update until you get no new updates
12. Restore your Identity Safe data
