We're haveing an issue with enabeling App Advisor (Norton Security Service) on Samsung devices (Android) (not tested on other devices). We are using the product as part of Symantec Mobility Suite/Mobility Threat Protection. Symantec support for Mobility Suite referred us to Norton since they are not supporting the Norton Mobile Security App, even if they are selling it as part of the suite. The app is deployed and managed through the Mobility Manager, but the user still has to enable App Adviser (or Norton Security service as it says) when opening the app the first time. This cannot be controlled from the Mobility Manager (there are no policy settings for this).
When you start the NMS app it shows a screen saying “Turn on Norton Security Service”. As I understand this service is actually App Advisor for Google Play. If you “click” to Activate it you are sent to the Accessibility Settings and a “note” is telling you to “Find and tap on Norton Security Service” (which you can find on the bottom of the “page”). This is working just fine if your device is configured with English as the system language. If your language is something else (at least NO and SE, did not test any other languages) it says that “Universal switch is not supporting your current system language. Text-to-speech language (TTS) will be set to English (USA), but this can lead to unexpected behavior”. If you select to go ahead and select Activate, it activates the service and it seems to work ok (and TTS has been changed to English USA). Not sure what the unexpected behavior is about, but I assume it will use English TTS language instead of local language in apps that use TTS.
After playing around with the TTS setting some more it seems that if you install the Norwegian High Quality TTS voice for Samsung TTS engine (did not find Norwegian available in Google TTS) before you activate App Advisor it will activate without the “warning” message. Not sure how to get around this issue other than through instructions to our user and have them install the local language TTS before activating the App Advisor (or Norton Security Service).
The challenge is that we have around 3000 users, most of them using local languages on their devices, and it is not nice if the user has to do a lot of actions to get this product configured properly, either through installing the local TTS language first or possibly even worse, instructing users to "ignore" the warning message with words like "not supporting" and "unexpected bahvior". It seems the Samsung TTS languages are not available for download as APKs, at least not through official "channels" so installing it via our MDM (Mobile Device Management) system seems not to be an option.
The basic question is if there is any way to get around this issue without very detailed instructions to the users.
