I have installed Norton Mobile Security on my Sony Xperia T and I've noticed it's using a significant amount of data (3G). This is despite Live Update set to Off and Norton Community Watch off too. I've attached screenshots of what I'm talking about. I like the app; however, I'm not on an unlimited data contract and this app is using 45+mb of data a month. Is there any reason for this data usage and can it be turned off?

I haven't updated NMS and I have the latest version available on the Play Store installed (V3.2.0.769). The data usage is also reported with my service provider as the phone usage reports are the same as the provider's reports.
The data is used in incriments. About 1-2MB a day and usually in smaller chunks of around 100-200kb at a time. Because of this, when my phone is on standby it also seems to be waking it for short periods of time (as seen in the Android battery stats).
This has been occuring since I installed the app over a month ago but I will take your advice and reinstall the app to see if there is a change over the Christmas period.
I assume that you are using the paid and not the Lite version. If so have you had a look at the mobilesecuity.norton.com website so see what it is saying about your phone? I am just wondering if for some reason there is an exchange of data between the two maybe as part of a tracking?
As a matter of interest, just in case it is a tracking location issue, have you got GPS enabled and do you allow allow Google's location services?
And as a last thought, do you happen to have Norton Mobile Utilities loaded on your phone? If you do there is a data tracker in that and it might be interesting to see what that says. I think it is available in the free version so even if you do not currently have the app loaded you might like to try it. Open the app, tap the icon below "Speed Booster" (not the Kill All Tasks bar), then on the top bar select Network and it should show that total data transfer per app since the last reboot of the phone. Not sure if that will help but it might be interesting to have a look.
I'm using the Lite version as I wanted to trial the app before purchasing the paid verson with tracking. I'm not sure if I will purchase the paid version until I resolve the data usage issue I have here, as I'm sure you can understand.
I do have GPS enabled and location services; however, as tracking isn't enabled on the Lite version I can't imagine that is the problem.
After the reinstall the issue remains and I can see the app using data as it did before. I will install the NMU app but it may show the same thing.
NMU has a "Plan Tracker" that includes Mobile Data so I was wondering if it was showing the same sort of mobile data usage as you are seeing in your other readings. Is it?
My readings for NMS data usage are far smaller than yours.
I was just wondering if there was a way to access a breakdown of data usage with NMU; however, this is the data usage from the stock Android settings and NMU with the same cycle. NMU is showing the same data usage as the Android log.
Thanks for that orangeyred. Interesting but it has me beaten .... :-(
I will see if I can get one of the project team to join in this thread, so hang about for a bit and with luck someone who knows what he is talking about may appear.
Sorry I cannot help.
Good luck and thanks for the fascinating feedback.
Thank you for your replies Andmike, and I look forward to further investigation into it. I will keep the app installed for now in the hope a solution can be found.
Have you checked whether the network activity is for the foreground data or background data in Norton Mobile Security? You can check this by going into Settings>Data Usage>Tap NMS and scroll down to see the data usage break-up.
If it is collecting lot of Background data, you may choose to restrict the collection of background data by checking the option underneath it which automatically is overridden when you connect to a Wi-Fi network.
It would be great if you could share the version of Android OS you have installed in your device & the type of device you are using. Also check if you have large number of contacts on your device and if it is scheduled to back up.
The data is exclusively background data, no foreground data at all. Thanks for the tip, I will disable the background data and hopefully the app will continue to function.
I'm using a Sony Xperia T (LT30p) running Android 4.0.4 ICS. I have 190 contacts which are saved on my Google account and not on the phone so I would guess they are always in sync although there's no scheduled back up.
