Norton NIS 2009 - AntiSpam for inbox is not working after upgrade from 2007 version

Running Windows XP SP2 Media Edition, Outlook XP, with NIS 2009. Upgraded to NIS 2009 from 2007. Antispam is not automatically filtering spam.  Thus all spam stays in the regular inbox and NO spam is moved to the antispam folder. Thanks.

Also, I am running NIS 2009, v16.1.0.33 with the latest updates/definitions.  Please let me know if there is a problem making the antispam filter automatically or if there is a solution.  Thanks!!

Antispam's client integration to Outlook must be turned on. By default it is turned off.
To enble it please do these step:
1. Open NIS main panel
2. Click on Settings
3. Find Internet Settings, and in that Antispam
4. In the Antispam click on Client Integration's Configure button
5. On the pop-up window enalble Outlook's integration too
6. Click OK, OK again, and close NIS + run Outlook, and you will have now the Antispam toolbar in Outlook.

Thanks, I noticed that that the Norton toolbar was at the to of the Outlook application window after I first loaded NIS 2009 and turned on the Antispam and clicked on "Outlook" in the Client Integration window.  This was done right up front when I loaded NIS 2009.  So the Norton folder is there and looks fine in the Outlook application, but none of the spam messages automatically go into the Norton Antispam Folder when spam is received.  Instead, the spam messages stay in the IN box and I have to manually select the spam messages and then click on the Norton Toolbar button called "This is spam".  Thus, there is no automatic movement of spam messages from my IN box to the Norton Antispam folder.

What might be preventing spam messages from automatically moving out of my IN box over to the Norton Antispam folder? This feature worked fine with the NIS 2007 version.

Try resetting client integration in Norton AntiSpam. Make sure that all other applications including Outlook is closed while you perform the necessary steps.
1. Start Norton Internet Security.
2. In the Internet pane, click Settings.
3. Under Internet Settings, if the AntiSpam shows Off, click the status indicator to turn it On.
4. Next to Client Integration, click Configure.
5. Under Email Clients, uncheck the email client that has the problem. In your case, uncheck Microsoft Outlook.
6. Click Apply > OK.
7. Restart the computer.
8. After the computer restarts, start Norton Internet Security.
9. In the Internet pane, click Settings.
10. Next to Client Integration, click Configure.
11. Under Email Clients, check Microsoft Outlook.
12. Click Apply > OK.

13. Run LiveUpdate and restart the computer.

Thanks for your help and ideas.

I tried this one time last week and it did not work.  Then I tried this same 13 step process this weekend and it still did not work.  Thus , the NIS 2009 is not autofiltering/moving the spam emails from the in box to the norton antispam folder.  Not sure why.

Any ideas that might be helpful to try?

Thanks.

You probably installed v2009 on top off. Please uninstall v2009 --> reboot --> install v2009 again.

This might work

Before I installed the NIS 2009 version, I ran a norton program called Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

This took the NIS 2007 version off the PC prior to my installing the newer NIS 2009 version.  I can take off the NIS 2009 and see what happens after a uninstall and reinstall, but it would seem strange to do it again -- especially since I ran the special norton removal software program.  Shouldn't the Norton_Removal_Tool.exe program have done what we needed in removing the old program properly and setting it up correctly?  Have you used this Nortal Removal Tool program in the past?  Are there issues with it sometimes not working to remove everything 100%?

Eventhough the Norton removal tool is designed to remove all the components of Norton program, sometimes it is required to run multiple times to accomplish that. If you are going to try uninstall/reinstall NIS 2009, then run Norton removal tool multiple times(say 2-3 times) and then reinstall Norton 2009 program.

jkarrett,

Can you check your Outlook settings to make sure that your POP/SMTP mail is receiving through ports 25 and 110? A lot of ISP's recently have defaulted to using encryption for emails, and NIS does not currently support scanning or AntiSpam on encrypted emails.

I checked the setting for Outlook and saw the incoming email server (POP3) set at 995 and the outgoing email server (SMTP) set at 465.  Both of them have the SSL connection checked in the box.  I attempted to chang them to the default settings and the email did not send or receive.  I can check with my email provider for any options that can provide, but I think they require the SSL to be checked (turned on) and these two servers assignments of 995 and 465 are likely also the only option. I don't think they will be able to provide a different set of email server ports for me to use.

Why is it not possible for the antispam to filter incoming outlook messages with a email server ports set at something different than the default?  Isn't there some way to get the antispam filter to work so that spam messages will automatically go into the norton antispam folder?  Any ideas would be a great help.  Thanks!

As we can see from your email settings, you are using encryption. We’re sorry but at this time scanning/filtering is not supported on encrypted emails by NIS. However, you are still protected by Auto-Protect if there are malicious attachments on your email.

Thanks.  I guess a good number of ISP's and email providers are requiring the configuation in outlook to have secure SSL email port servers.  Any idea if the NIS product has plans to do proper antispam filtering regardless of the email server port numbers.  There must be an easy (somewhat) work-around for this type of thing on the app development side.

Please communicate this issue to your product development organization.  If you have any additional ideas that would make the antispam filtering work with Outlook using email server ports different that the basic microsoft default's -- please be sure to let me know.

Best regards,

J

There are ways to make the product work with other ports but, in your case, that won't help. The problem is the your ISP is not using/allowing simple SMTP or POP protocols to transfer the mail to and from your computer. They are using a secure, encrypted communication. Because of that security and encryption, our product actually can't recognize the data that is being sent.

One solution would be for Symantec to make an extension for each and every e-mail application that is out there. By working directly with the application, if it supports it, our products can inspect the unencrypted data and appropriately categorize it. This solution is very expensive and risky, though, because every extension would have to be different. Whether Symantec makes some specific extensions for, say, Outlook in the future is unknown but the product managers are aware of this issue.

Thanks for the clarification.  This will help when I contact my internet email provider (AT&T) and discuss with them any alternatives I can try so that NIS will be allowed to see email via a non-secure connection.  Thanks.

Hey, Reese,

That is just not acceptable. The product is sold, without qualfication, as including the Antispam feature (website today 2 Feb '09). My previous product NIS 2005, worked just fine, on the same  configuration (Outlook 2003, encrypted, incoming port 995).  I only upgraded after being forced to when Windows Upgrade 'did' me on IE7, Symantec's reply being 'not compatible - u/g to NIS2009'. £40 please. Then I find the functionality of the Antispam feature has simply been removed in these circumstamces.

In the UK we have the Sale of Goods Act, makes it an offence to sell items that are willfully misdescribed, I imagine there's similar legislation elsewhere. What good reason is there for us not lodging complaints under that?

Worse - after a very extended chat session with tech support, none of this was mentioned, despite being a known issue, viz. your post. She took control of my PC, 'trained' including the Inbox (that's an error), I lost the PC to 100% processor utilisation for 18 HOURS, before cancelling that.

Are the 'product team' working on this? When can we expect a solution? Or at the very least a disclaimer on the publicity, so we could avoid buying in to this absent functionality?

In hope of a positive reply,

Andy Smith

Andy,

I'm sorry to say that Norton Internet Security has never supported the AntiSpam feature with encrypted e-mail traffic. Your 2005 product was either not filtering spam or you were using the non-encrypted e-mail protocols. If you purchased the upgrade solely to gain this functionality, than I suggest that you contact Symantec's customer support and ask for a refund of your money.

As I mentioned previous, product management is aware of this enhancement request and will keep it in mind when designing future product releases.

Reese,

I read Andy's message about the problem he had.  This is really strange, because I also started with NIS 2005 and due to a automatic MS Windows XP update, all of a sudden the NIS did not work and things were not working properly on my PC.  Your Symatec technician's took control of my PC for about 4 hours (yes this was back in 2007) and could not get it working properly.  They then upgraded for free my PC to NIS 2007.  They said it had some updates that would correct things.  The removed the old NIS 2005 first, then they loaded a new NIS 2007.  Then also had to add the antispam add-on package that was not part of the main software load of NIS 2007.  Then late in 2008, the norton antispam buttons were no longer appearing on my Outlook windows.  They disappeared and the technician said this happens sometimes, but he could not figure out why.  They upgraded me to NIS 2009 and now the antispam buttons are back on the toolbar in Outlook, but the antispam does not work now with the secure ports for POP3 email.

I am glad Andy wrote his message, because it reminded me that NIS 2005 worked just fine with AT&T's WorldNet email service with secure authentication on the email ports.   When I used NIS 2005 the antispam feature worked just fine with my secure authentication email ports.  With NIS 2007 they also worked, but then the toolbar buttons disappeared and would not come back on the Outlook screen.  Thus my need to upgrade to NIS 2009 -- which the antispam buttons appeared, but the antispam function work NOW not work.

I am NOT a IT expert, but Reese, I think you did NOT work on the NIS product version 2005.  If you had been working for Symantec back then, you would know that the NIS 2005 product did actually work with antispam correctly with the secure email ports.  This feature has been eliminated on the latest version of NIS 2009 and there is not clarification that this function and/or requirements for the email provider had changed.  Also, in the NIS 2005 version, there was an excellent Pop-up blocker as part of the overall NIS 2005 software and that feature has also been taken away.  That Pop-up blocker worked very well and removed large ads from the screen as well as when you print a screen from a website -- such as Mapquest has with the huge ads all over their pages.

So if I load the NIS 2005 software on a PC that NIS 2005 will work with still, I can prove that the antispam feature works properly with secure authentication email services -- such as AT&T's WorldNet Service.  It used to work with my AT&T WorldNet email and it always has had secure email ports specified in the Outlook configuration.  It worked just fine with NIS 2005 and also NIS 2007.  For some reason you (Symantec) took this feature away on the NIS 2009 product.  The problem with NIS 2005, is that it will not work with Microsoft's XP SP3.  I think I have an old PC with XP SP2 on it, and could load this and try the email again.

Do you have a temporary product key that could be used for NIS 2005 -- one that will work for a few weeks, so I can demonstate that the Antispam feature worked properly on NIS 2005.  I still have the NIS 2005 CD and would need a temporary key.  I don't want to go on to NIS 2005 and then pay for a new product key. That would be silly.

Thanks.

Hello jkarrett,

I hope to ease some confusion here. Here is a support link for Norton Internet Security 2005 that might be helpful for you:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/0/62f272622ee2ebbe88256ed700746783?OpenDocument&seg=hm&lg=en&ct=us

As you can see by scrolling down to the bottom, it displays this:

Norton AntiSpam does not support email connections using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). SSL is a protocol that is designed to provide secure communications on the Internet. If you use an SSL connection to access your email, you are not protected by Norton AntiSpam.

Windows updates that you may have received could have changed settings in Outlook that enabled SSL for your accounts.

I hope this eases any confusion.
