99% of software manufactures don’t go around telling the world there is newer version. Its up to you the user to keep up with times. Norton products are sold in stores and online. Everytime you go into Staples or Bestbuy you will see new versions and releases or Norton or even McAfee. When Vista came out Microsoft didn’t go around email people telling them a new OS is out. Every new year brings new makes and models of cars. Every new year brings new and updated versions of software. I have also seen advertisements in the news paper ads for Norton.

Thanks Dieselman743:

I completly agree with your answer, that was why I was asking: why are some of the Norton users seeing this upgrade offer from Norton durning there live updates?

Thanks again.

Can you point (URL links please) to any such messages? I don't recollect seeing messages that people were advised during live updates but I've been off line recently for a few weeks. I know I've never had a message like that from Norton when I've been updating.

What I have seen here is users telling other users that they are entitled to upgrade say from NIS 2008 to NIS 2009 without any charge for the unexpired portion of their 2008 subscription. This we know because Norton Staffers -- names in red -- have posted this here from time to time and it may even be on the Norton website.

PS I guess this may be what you are referring to:

I'll read through that thread; which I see you have joined.

Hi huwyngr:

Yes that was one of them.

Here is another that was on: http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&thread.id=9915

Here is what was said:

Then by all means, tell the LiveUpdate folks to stop pushing the "free upgrade" that just cost me about 8 hours. After installing 2009 on two machines two days ago after seeing that message, I totally died this morning when I fired up Outlook.  I've just done the revert to NAV 2008 dance on those two machines. I will say your live support tech was helpful in that process. But you have known about this issue a lot longer than two days, and you're still drawing more victims in with the upgrade message. Fix that first. I also saw a third one, but I can not locate it at this time.

Thanks again. Yall are the BEST.

About 2 days ago I opened up my Norton Anti virus 2008 , that I purchased over the internet,  a box opened up and said I could get an upgrade . Followed the link to Norton and said as a subscriber I could get upgrades to Norton anti virus 2009. So, I downloaded it and my OS has been terrible for 2 days ! My computer barely runs !   It has literally taken me all day to get to this website to post this.  I am not very computer savvy, but I tried to find 2008 and very time 2009 would come up. I don’t want 2009, I want my 260 days left on 2008 back. So I uninstalled 2009 ,probably a mistake, but at least my computer is running now, only problem is , now I have no anti virus at all.   Have emailed support, just warning others , be very careful downloading 2009.

You should have completely uninstalled NIS 2008 first and foremost.

If you are running Windows, perhaps a System Defragment may help. :smileyhappy:

As I installed 2009 it removed 2008.

Thanks snowbunnie, computer runs fine after uninstalling 2009.

Yes sometimes it does but uninstalling any software before installing a newer version is always the bets idea. That way there you know its gone before you install the latest version.

Snowbunnie that has nothing to do with apples or oranges. A defrag is a way to reogranize your hard drive.

What will a good defragmenter do for you?

When files are scattered and saved on your disk drive in a discontinuous way, your disk is referred to as fragmented. Depending on how often you use your computer and how many files and programs you save, delete, modify, your disk drive will be fragmented very quickly or very slowly. Either way, it will happen, and your operating system will begin to perform functions more and more slowly, until a process that used to take a few seconds to perform now takes a few minutes. Therefore, it was necessary to create a way to combat this process, which is where Raxco comes in. Our company has been serving home and business PC users from around the world and helping them find software solutions to all types of PC problems for the past 25 years. We have seen the problem fragmentation has caused our customers, and as a solution, we have developed the ultimate defragmenter, PerfectDisk.

PerfectDisk works by rearranging the files on your disk drive in a continuous way, so your operating system does not have to waste time looking for all of the pieces of a specific file or program. Raxco worked hard to make PerfectDisk the best defragmenter in the market, and we believe with our latest edition, version 7.0, we have accomplished our goal. PerfectDisk goes beyond every other defragmenter available by not only putting together files in a continuous ways, but optimizing their order, so that the files used most often are more accessible and can be found even more quickly by the computer. PerfectDisk accomplishes this in just a single defragmenter pass – as opposed to the several passes another defragmenter would take – and it also uses a minimal amount of free space.

I'm one of many many people who have installed NIS 2009 on top of NIS 2008 and not had it do any damage to my operating system. So you really need to look for another explanation than blaming NIS 2009 -- I know you are just reporting what happened to you but that can not be the end of the story!

Others have suggested a clean install and if you have no other Norton applications installed that you want to keep -- like GHOST or Save & Restore then you could use the Norton Removal Tool to clean up and then reinstall NIS 2009 which really is a highly desirable improvement.

This link: Symantec Norton Removal Tool. will direct you to the current Symantec Norton Removal Tool.

Get a new copy of NIS 2009 by downloading it to a safe place on your PC -- I burn mine to a CD -- and before you install it disable any Firewalls you may have installed. If you are worried about security you can always disconnect physically from the internet until NIS needs it to activate and update.

You have not said what version of Windows you are using -- if it is VISTA then use the Run as Administrator option to install from the downloaded file.

Keep an eye open here for other suggestions.

Debr,

You should try installing 2009 again.  Sometimes an install gets interrupted and things go to pieces:

Clean up the debris with this:

Norton Removal Tool

Then get and install the 2009 upgrade from here:

Good luck

hopefully, if I did this right, here is a link to the page that comes up and says subscribers can get the 2009 anti virus.  This page comes up after I select Norton anti virus as my product and select version 2008.

thanks so much for your input.  Honestly, I am afraid too reinstall 2009.  My OS was so sloooowwwww.

Debj

This is a page that identifies the product you currently have (or, in your case, had), not the product offered as an update.  You can't get AV 2008 or NIS 2008 directly off the Symantec site, to the best of my knowledge.  Perhaps an online technician could provide you a link to the actual product or you can find a friend with a disk (all you need is your own activation key).

I still recommend you give 2009 a shot.

NIS 2009 is the fastest there has ever been. Please completely uninstall 2008 then install 2009.

That looks like the correct page to get a download but I checked what happens if you click on Continue and it tells you to run because what it gives you then is a stub file that is installed on your PC and then it goes about getting the full file and installing it without you saving a copy, which is my preferred method.

What you can do is to go to the Trialware section of the Norton Website and select NAV2009 there. Then I hope you can download a complete file to install NAV2009.

When you install it you can use the KEY for your NAV2008 to activate it for the balance of your 2008 subscription. If you entered that in Norton Account then the installation may even go and get it automatically or you will be given the possibility of telling it Use an Existing KEY.

I hope that works for you but if anything is not clear just shout.

OP Debjr  is talking NAV not NIS ... <s>

Not that I disagree with installing NIS instead of NAV <g>
