Norton One Click Support Virus

All my Norton antivirus/antispyware/antimalware has been turned off and soon as I turn it back on again it turns itself back on.
When the system 1st comes on a "Norton One Click Support" box appears, same thing happens when I try to run a virus scan, it cuts out and the pop up appears!

Please help!

I should add that the pop up comes  up saying

PRODUCT UPDATE AVAILABLE!

You have recieved the following error: Module: 30388 error: 100

Installing the latest product may resolve your issue. Please click start for more detail.

Have you restarted your system?

Check that your system date and time are correct.

Tried restarting and the pop up still appears and as soon as I turn on antivurs etc. it turns straight back off again!

Time and Date are correct.

Okay well this is really weird.

I've just got back from work and turned the laptop on and the Norton One Click Support pop up hasnt shown up and all my antivirus settings are all back on now.

What on earth happened then? If Norton One Click Support is a genuine part of Norton, its worrying that it turns of all defenses.

Whilst I'm here, I don't know if this is related or not, but when I run chkdsk lately, it stops at 27% on stage 2.

Ignore the chkdsk part as that's now worked too.

So can you explain what exactly Norton One Click Support is?

If you can get us a screenshot if it happens again we can tell more. It sounds like the Autofix feature that checks your norton installation and notifies you or fixes itself.

This can be triggered when you restart your computer while it checks to see if your virus definitions are up to date.

BLM,

No one seems to have asked you what version of Norton 360 you had installed before you started getting this popup that you think is a virus?

Norton changed the identity numbering of N 360 this year and so last year 2012 was V6 but this year 2013 is not V7 but V20 to bring it in line with the other Norton products.

If you had last year's installed then Norton has a feature called Automatic Download of Version Update or maybe of New Version which when there is a complete upgrade (not updating the engine or the definitons) it downloads the files needed to make the change during idle time and then lets you know with a PopUp like you mention; and that could happen if you run the OneClick Support if that detects you have the older version.

Can you click on Support / About on the main screen of your Norton 360 and tell us what version number you have: it is in the format nn.nn.nn.nnn where n is a number from 0 to 9 and then we will have a better idea what may be going on.

It says it''s Version: 3.8.3.6

Well that is 4 years old so it's not surprising if Norton is persistent in telling you about an update!

What version of Windows are you running it on?

That explains a lot!
I'm on Windows Vista.

So what do I need to do now?

It's Norton AntiVirus is it not Internet Security or Norton 360 ? You posted in the N360 Forum but you refer to Norton antivirus, maybe as an element.

Does it have the Identity safe for storing logins and passwords and do you use this feature?

How close to expiry is your subscription?

I'd rather have you confirm that since when I think about it I don't think OneClickSupport was available back in Version 3 days?

I DO have Norton 360.

What I said (or meant to say) was, when the pop up was appearing, it was coming up that under the antivirus settings that auto-protect, SONAR and Antispyware were all disabled. When I turned them back on again, they immediately turned back off.

I have 48 days of subscription left and yes, it has indentity safe.

Get confirmation on this (I still wonder about that Version ID of 3...... !) but certainly the first thing to do is to export your Identity Safe data to a safe place and if it offers more than one version of file format use both of them.

Then the question is whether to uninstall completely using the Norton Removal Tool and then do a new install or whether to use the Norton Remove & Reinstall Tool which does both and automatically gets from your Norton Account a preactivated copy of the current download that is available -- it will still need the routine updating after installation.

So see what the Norton 360 brigade suggests since I'm using Norton Internet Security.

To be honest, I haven't used Identity Safe!
Should I set it up now?

And do I need to update Norton itslef?

I was wondering about that. No don't set it up now. If you had been I was going to ask my colleagues if you might be better updating to the 2012 V6 which has a slighly different setup for Identity Safe that some prefer. Since you don't use it yet I'd suggest asking yourself how often you need to provide a full login with ID and Password and whether it is better to keep doing it manually.

That's what we do here in my household but I do have a "Password Keeper" which holds them encrypted in case I forget anything but that is all manual.

Yes what you will be updating will be the whole Norton 360 and getting what is probably a different appearing screen setup and maybe some new features .... certainly the ability to work with later Windows including Windows 8.
