Norton Online Backup: Shows "successful completion" but no files are backed up

For the past 9 months I have used NOBU without problems with the Firefox browser and Windows XP.  A few days ago, after replacing Norton Internet Security 2010 with NIS 2011, it was necessary to use the “add a computer” solution because of the “computer not online” problem with NOBU.  Only a single computer is involved.

The second computer made a successful default backup, but after purging and removing the first computer, and then selecting sources for the remaing computer, the attempted backup began immediately, and within seconds showed that backup completed successfully, although no files (0 files, 0 MB) were backed up.

I later uninstalled and reinstalled NOBU, gave the second computer a different name, removed the previous backup set, and entered backup sources in the new computer, yet the outcome of each subsequent backup attempt is the same: when I click “backup now,” it indicates backup in progress (awaiting agent backup) and within seconds shows successful completion but no files or bytes are backed up.  There are no error codes displayed.
