if our child disabled the add on in IE would that prompt an email? i
f they were playing a game through IE could that disable safety minder?
Do you have Norton Internet Security or Norton 360 installed as well as Norton Online Family?
If so, you should check to see which version of Norton Safety Minder is loaded on your child's computer. You this by right clicking the NSM icon in the notification area of the task bar and selecting About Norton Safety Minder. If you see anything earlier than 2.2.0.38, then I suspect it to be a bug with NIS/N360 since NSM is supposed to automatically download updates without using LiveUpdate.
What apparently is happening is that NIS/N360 antivirus handling is treating the NSM automatic download update as a virus. This may also be the case with other non-Norton based antivirus solutions.
Anyway, you can verify if NIS/N360 is blocking NSM by checking the recent scan history in NIS/N360 and look for a medium severity threat about the time of the disconnect that has an activity of "Unauthorized access logged (Access Process Data)" with the Actor being "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONHOST.EXE" and the Target as "C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Online\AddOns\Norton Safety Minder\Engine\A.B.C.D\TampMon.exe" where A.B.C.D is a version number earlier than 2.2.0.38.
I'm working around this BUG by adding an exclusion from Auto-Protect and SONAR for the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Online\AddOns\Norton Safety Minder\Engine" folder path including all subfolders below it. It seems to be working since before I did the exclusion the kid's computer was at NSM version 2.1.0.52 which came out some time ago and now it's up to date.
However, I'm not entirely happy about doing this because NIS/N360 should understand about the behavior of NSM.
Anyway I wish you luck.

NiggermanMJ,
What version of NIS or N360 do you have and what OS are you running on?
Thanks,
actstwenty24,
This could be a case where the game sites that your child is accessing is causing our browser extensions to crash, which could, in turn, trigger a notification email.
Would you consider sharing the game sites that your child is accessing, so we can do some additional investigation?
The notification events should have a date/time stamp, which should coincide with the date/time that a webstie was accessed.
