Today, when I did a LiveUpdate for my NIS 20.2.0.19 by clicking on "Run LiveUpdate" in the "Settings" window, it prompted me to install a patch at the end of the update. I installed the patch and when I opened the "History" window I saw that Norton had blocked a whole bunch of this:
I also ran a manual LiveUpdate this morning. I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. Checking the logs of NIS 20.2.0.19 (2013) I noticed the following under the heading of Norton Tamper Protection:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM\WMIPRVSE.EXE
i.e. the Windows Management Instrumentation Provider Host.
It seems that the above process attempted to access the following file on my PC too:
Interestingly, even though I too am using version 20.2.0.19, files from version 20.1.1.2 remain.
This file is the Intrusion Prevention Plugin for Firefox. I don’t have Firefox installed but Mozilla did issue an update yesterday. and then Norton also put out a patch for this yesterday:
I would not have noticed the above activity in the logs if I had not read your post. Since I have not encountered any noticeably strange behaviour occurring, I would not worry about the above activity in the logs.
There are a very large number of blocked accesses in the logs from yesterday too for various programs. Once again, nothing strange happened on my PC yesterday. All of the entries are for legitimate programs.
I hope the above information is of assistance to you. Thank you.
Based on the date: November 21 2012 Today, I left computer on over night only to discover in the morning that my Norton Internet Security Icon on the task bar was missing!
I attempted to start the application from the programs menu but nothing happened.
I restarted my computer,
Then Norton Internet Security 2012 reappeared but I had to wait a few minutes before I could click the icon on the task bar then run update then run a complete system scan.
Two days earlier Norton Internet Security found an e-mail with a virus and removed it and there were in fact 2 e-mails from the same source that purported to be from the Better Business Bureau but were in fact Bogous and it is with this in mind I was concerned about why the program, Norton Internet Secueity 2012 had disappeared and become non responsive.
I am new to this forum, and my status is Visitor and I do not know where or how ir if I can post a New Topic so posted it here as a response to yours. But hope your situation is resolved promptly as well.

Coincidently, with all the problems I've had today with my NAV, I also decided to run Live Update manually, and the exact same thing happened to me as you describe.
I'll ask again....what problem is this patch supposed to address?? And why was the following also blocked 10 times by NAV during my manual Live Update/Patch Installation??
I figured that everyone else was getting the same patch today as well, but I'm glad to know that the Unauthorized Access Blocked (open file) for C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM\WMIPRVSE.EXE in the logs wasn't just on my end.
So I did another manuel update again and I see there is a new patch that needs to be applied.....figured I'd take a peek in the history and guess what.... C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM\WMIPRVSE.EXE is blocked again....
I think it is becoming quite evident that there are some serious programming/product issues with the latest version. I've never experienced the kind of problems with my computer that I've experienced since upgrading from NAV 2011 to the latest version about 1 week ago. In addition to all the problems today, my computer completely locked-up on Monday while resuming from Sleep mode.
In addition to my problems, My Dads PC locked up several times last Friday while trying to simultaneously perform maintenance scans and defragging, which never happened before I upgraded his PC to 2013 1 month ago. Coincidence? Perhaps. But the fact that neither one of us had theses system problems prior to upgrading to NAV 2013 has me very suspicious, and has me seriously second-guessing my decision to upgrade to 2013 so soon following its initial release.
I'm running NIS 2012. Not a Firefox user, maybe will try it someday. I have a habit of almost always looking at the update summary when running liveupdate manually, especially when it requires a restart.
This seems to me, to be for if I were a Firefox user. The update didn't impact me in any way as far as problems afterwards. This was sometime yesterday, Nov. 21.
Thanks Ed, for posting a screen shot of your liveupdate summary. I did not get that window after applying the patch.
That helps tremendously as to what was going on. Not sure why Norton/Symantec did not see fit to let customers know what the patch is for in a more clear manner.
