Norton performing background tasks / causes computer to freeze

For the past week, I've been having the "Norton is performing background tasks" message stuck on the bottom of my screen.  I cannot x/close out of it, I have to reboot.  When I try to reboot, I have to force end the "ccSvc.."  process.    I cannot work until I reboot, due to the fact that my computer is very slow/sluggish while the "background task" message is stuck  on the screen.

I am running NAV 2009, Windows XP home, and IE7.

I saw another post where others were having the same problem, but it was from last November and I did not see any solutions.  Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem,?  Please Help!

Hi Debl1980,

There is a possiblility for Idle Time Scan running in the background. I am not sure whether you have set the schedule for Idle Time Scan. If it is set for Daily basis, then Norton may run the scan from background whenever your computer is idle. That may be the reason for system crash when you leave the computer idle for few minutes. Disable the Idle Scan from Norton 2009 program and check whether the problem happens again. Also, let us know whether you have any other Security programs like Webroot Spysweeper or ZoneAlarm.

Thank you for the reply, I'll try what you suggested when I get home tonight.

No, I don't have any other security programs running.

If you're still around, could you please explain how to disable the Idle Scan from Norton 2009?

Thanks for your help!

Here are the steps:

1. Start Norton 2009 program.

2. In the Computer pane, click Settings.

3. Under Computer Scans, near Idle Time Scan, select Off from the drop-down menu.

4. Click Apply > OK.
