Additional logic to resolve network problems that prevent NPE from running
Undo to a separate partition
If you remove a file that makes the system unbootable, (certain rootkits that hook the OS for example) you can boot from NBRT or another Windows partition and undo the changes to the other OS.
Note: Current NBRT does not use NPE 2.5 beta.
Main UI and setting layout change
Norton Live Banner
At the bottom of the Main UI there is a banner with a link to a Norton Live page that reads-
“Need help with a virus or spyware? A live expert can remotely remove it for you. Learn more about this paid service”
Rootkit Scan enabled by default
The Rootkit scan will run by default. There is an option in settings to disable this.
Improved usability scan results screen
‘Unknown’ files now have an info dialog pop-up to provide more information about the detection. In order to remove an ‘Unknown’ file users will first need to click the ‘enable action on the file’ button found on the info pop-up dialog .
The Cloud Scan flow has been changed to a cloud shaped button.

It's always good to see that this project is not abandoned by Symantec and it's updating frequently when the threat landscape is going to change. Whether you have included advanced rootkit detection techniques(especially against Backdoor.Tidserv.M and Trojan.Zeroaccess)into the last beta build, or the only way to detect and / or clean these rootkits is the NPE scan on NBRT environment?
Can you please check if the NPE-Beta.exe is not corrupted? There should be Symantec signature in the Digital Signature tab of Properties window. The size of the file is 2.64 MB (2,775,112 bytes) [The size on the disk may vary] Please check what the size is on your end.
Can you please let us know what OS you are running?
A common reason for the error which you are facing is that either the file is corrupted/missing or virus/malware exists on the machine.
Also, please try downloading NPE on a clean machine and then using it in the infected machine.
I just recently used power eraser and it came up with physicaldrive0. So I continued to fix and now I cannot boot. I’ve tried several times to recover from multiple different recovery points to no success. There is NOTHING in support about power eraser and I’ve found nothing else anywhere
The Norton team has just released the new Norton Power Eraser beta, NPE 2.5.0.26
I hope many of you have a chance to try it and let us know what you think..
We look forward to reading your feedback and great ideas.
Key changes in this release:
• Improved Network Resiliency We have added additional logic to resolve network problems that prevent NPE from running
• Undo to a separate partition If you remove a file that makes the system unbootable, (certain rootkits that hook the OS for example) you can boot from NBRT or another Windows partition and undo the changes to the other OS Note: Current NBRT does not use NPE 2.5 beta.
• Main UI and setting layout changes Main UI layout has been updated with the three principal actions available as clickable button (Scan, History, Settings) Similarly, the settings page layout has been refreshed and updated.
• Setting option to only show bad files Suspicious files that would normally be shown in the scan results can be suppressed. Users that have a high number of suspicious files that are safe may wish to enable this setting.
Sounds like Norton Power Eraser (NPE) has detected the Boot Record (MBR) and has either deleted it or incorrectly disinfected the MBR, when this happens you on booting the PC will usually get a black screen with a white flashing underscore.
Depending on the Windows you have of course for which command to use, but use the recovery disc or installation disc etc, then use the command prompt to fix the MBR
