Norton Power Eraser Error 0x80045009.0

Yesterday morning, I tried to run Norton Power Eraser after I'd run my normal full system scan in safe mode.  It seemed to hang and stayed on a message, "Checking internet connection" for over an hour.  My internet connection was (and still is) fine, as other items can be called up on the net, so I finally cancelled it out.  Now I get an error message "Norton Power Eraser is already running" along with the Error Code 0x80045009.0 each time I try to run NPE.  I've cancelled NPE out in Autoruns, but it's persistent, and comes back each time I restart my computer.  How do I get rid of this error code and the persistent NPE, and run the NPE scan?  I've run NPE dozens of times in the past, in both Safe Mode and "normal mode, with no problems.  I suspect I may have an issue, as my computer has slowed down markedly (and rather suddenly), and other strange things are happening with it.
