After all these weeks NPE finally ran the scans (System Scan, Scan for Rootkits) properly today. I hadn't changed anything on my computer at all so whatever the Norton team did to fix the definitions it worked (let's hope it stays working). Just posting this news here to update the situation...
Ever since May 23 (or 24?), I have experienced this error every time I try to run Norton Power Eraser from Norton Security.
I have tried everything suggested in this thread: re-installed Norton, run the standalone version of NPE downloaded from Norton website, ran with and without computer reboot, updated definitions via LiveUpdate and manually by Intelligent Updater, and STILL I get this error.
I can run "Scan for Unwanted Apps" on NPE without any problems - it's only when I run the System Scan (without restart) / Scan for Rootkits (with restart) that I get this error.
I ran Full Scan with Norton Security and Malwarebytes and found no infections.
I normally run NPE on a weekly basis and I've been using this for YEARS now without any problems until now.
I've been using Norton since the days of Norton Antivirus and then Norton 360 and now Norton Security Premium (I've used Norton ever since I got my first computer). My computer is running Windows and my Norton Security version is 22.9.3.13 (newest version according to my LiveUpdate / New Version Check).
I haven't changed anything on my computer. I haven't installed or uninstalled anything, I haven't changed any settings, I only run Norton scans on a weekly basis to check that my computer is clean.
I have waited for a week now for this issue to be resolved (maybe Symantec will fix their definitions, etc.) but so far it still hasn't been fixed, which is why I'm now posting about it here.
Can Symantec please fix their definitions as suggested by these posts in this thread:
Honestly, I've given up on NPE. It doesn't seem that this issue is on Symantec's radar which is quite disappointing. It pains me to say this, but I am not sure I will stick with Norton products after my subscription expires in a few months.
Same problem here. I got the message that there was high network activity and that I should run NPE. After a few minutes I got the same error message. What can I do to resolve this issue or should I ignore things?
I've had the same error as well in Windows 10. I found that I can run Norton Power Eraser in Safe Mode, and it works perfectly. Just run msconfig, and set Boot to "Safe Mode with Networking", reboot your computer, and run NPE.
I am running the latest Windows updates (which includes the anniversary edition) as well as the most recent BIOS and firmware on my PC, but am still having the issue... :(
Sorry for the late reply. The problem went away for me after I upgraded to Windows 10 Anniversary edition as suggested by peterweb. I ran NPE again just now, first the applications scan - no problem. Then the system scan - it died! Same error message as before. I then ran the applications scan a second time - no problem! No idea why...
Okay, here it is January 2017 and this is still an issue that Norton has not resolved. I just got it again today on my Windows 10 machine when running the NPE. This is an issue that a Norton tech (in India) looked into around a year ago and did nothing to resolve the problem. Oye. Good luck getting any help from Symantec on this. It seems that they must have let go of most of their experienced tech people and hired people who are clueless.
I received a warning today from the Norton Security app indicating that excessive data had been observed coming from my PC, and that I should consider running NPE. I did so, and got the same exact crash of the NPE app.
If you check near the bottom in this thread, the users believe that the Win 10 Anniversary Update has fixed the issue.
The style of error number looks like the Microsoft stop codes. So it is possible that it was an MS update that was causing the error, and the latest updates has fixed it.
Please let us know if you have been updated to the Win 10 AU, and if it helped with this issue.
