You need a Windows admin account to run NPE so that that program has full access rights to your system. Also, the reboot will be into the same admin account so any changes can be made.
If you use Windows 8/8.1 or 10, there can be an issue with the Fast Start feature.. See more information here.
Why not just run NPE from within your Norton Security product. That will have the latest version of NPE. Look under Scans in the Security section.
I started computer in SAFEMODE but apparently Norton Power Eraser does not work under SAFE MODE. Why??? I downloaded Norton Power Eraser directly from the Norton site and run it from the program. Normally NPE will create an ICON on the desktop for the program. But, even though Norton Power Eraser has been downloaded it has not made an ICON on the desktop for NPE. Why? Is there a problem with NPE?? thanks.
Why is using or not using a Windows admin account important?? I checked my computer system status and it says the user name and it lists the user as administrator. Should it be administrator or should it not be??? Mention was made about Fast Start. Should Fast Start be on or off? Where do you find Fast Start? Norton Power Eraser not running after restart. Norton Power Eraser "crashes" after restart. Is there going to be a fix for this as some have mentioned? Or can this be fixed now? thanks
Hello, I am having the same problem. When I run NPE, it restarts my computer then does nothing. It doesn’t scan or anything. Any idea why? I ran all scans and they were clean.
Norton Power Eraser failed midway after reboot. Running Windows 10. Got the following error code: 0x800040005,n5,nc0. does this mean my computer has a virus? I migrated Norton Internet Security to the new windows version and made sure all of the program was correctly fixed. I downloaded Norton Power Eraser directly from Norton website. Saved it and then ran it. Still has the same problems. There is a malicious program desguising itself as Mozilla Firefox program update that Norton is NOT catching. Is this program blocking Norton Power Eraser?
rmcgann Are your downloading NPE from this link: https://security.symantec.com/nbrt/npe.aspx I always download it to my desktop and run it from there. Just did that before this post to test both the link and NPE itself. Both worked as advertised.
If you are concerned about a possible infection or malware you can also download the FREE version of Malwarebytes which runs great alongside Norton products here: https://www.malwarebytes.com/
Yes, it is running under a administrator account, but not as run as administrator. My login is an administrator ID.
You can run Norton as administrator. However, if you run NPE from Norton it is questionable if NPE then runs as administrator.
When you download NPE from the Norton website in under an administrator ID, it is questionable whether NPE runs as administrator when it auto-restarts after the reboot of the PC.
I found Power Erasure on the Norton website and ran it. It fails upon initiation after coming up after the reboot of the PC just like the Power Erasure run from the PC.
