Norton Power Eraser Won't Scan

Hello!

I have a pesky spyware/malware/virus issue that my normal Norton Antivirus 2012 scan can't find. I downloaded the Norton Power Eraser and was prompted to reboot in order to scan. I did so, and rebooted. But when I rebooted, nothing came up that said "scanning in progress" or anything like that. I've rebooted a few times, and nothing's changing. Is it scanning where I can't see, and will pop up when done, or something else?

Thanks for any help!

So how do you know you are infected at all??

Hi SAS,

You should normally see Power Eraser come back up again after the reboot and begin scanning. You might have some software that's blocking the RunOnce option in your registry that's preventing NPE from relaunching.

You can try running it without the initial reboot to see if you get a better result:
On the main screen (the one with "Scan for Risks", "History", and "Settings") choose Settings and deselect the "Include Rootkit Scan" option. Hit OK to return to the main screen and try Scan from there. It should proceed without any problems.

Hello,

I stumbled on your question about NPE and noticed you might not have gotten the help you need.

Before starting NPE in "rootkit" mode (where you'll need to reboot), try making that a "clean reboot" as outlined in

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796 , or if you prefer, "safe mode without networking".

Please write back with the result of that modified reboot; it's possible that some other software is interfering with NPE completing its scan.
