I have set up Privacy Monitor Assistant, but I am not totally sure of what I have signed up for. I have chatted with Norton with no success. I don’t know if my setup allows Norton to read my emails and I don’t know if I have to sync with my email account, my Google or Microsoft accounts. The setup is very vague. I also had about 12 legitimate accounts listed that I do business with, but 6 or 7 no longer show in the “Trusted” area. (I disconnected my Safe email App as it did show a box that would allow a human review if required,) I know this may not be the place to ask, but I want to keep PMA, but I don’t want my privacy invaded. This may be tied to Online Account Cleaner.

Hello @nychucky
Norton Privacy Monitor Assistant (PMA) operates governed by the Norton License and Services Agreement (LSA) and the core Norton Products Privacy Notice . Because the service actively acts as your agent to scrub your details from public directories, its legal terms contain highly specific permissions and operational boundaries.
Key Legal Terms & Conditions
By clicking “I Agree” to submit a removal request, you legally bind yourself to the following parameters set forth in the Norton LSA:
Third-Party Agent Authorization: You authorize Norton support agents to accept third-party terms of service and privacy agreements on your behalf to submit opt-out requests.
No Removal Guarantee: Norton does not guarantee or promise that data broker sites will cooperate, comply, or that they can successfully remove your records from every supported site.
Verification & Disclosures: To fulfill a request, Norton may have to disclose your personal information to the data broker. Brokers may contact you directly to confirm identity. In the U.S., you may be required to upload a driver’s license if a specific data broker demands it for verification.
Usage Frequency Limitations: Agent-assisted batch removal requests are strictly capped and can only be initiated once every 90 days (quarterly).
Data Handling & Privacy Policy
Because the assistant must look for you across the web, the data processing rules are distinct from traditional antivirus software:
Purpose-Bound Data Usage: The full name, email address, city, state, date of birth, and phone number you submit are used strictly to narrow down search records on people-search sites.
Distribution Rule: Internal security policies dictate that Norton never sells or leases the personal information collected within your Privacy Monitor profile.
Strict Access Control: Access to your data broker matches and case logs is compartmentalized and restricted exclusively to identity restoration and privacy specialists trained in secure processing workflows.
Credit Safeguards: The tool strictly searches public data broker repositories. It does not pull credit reports or place credit inquiries.
By default, standard Privacy Monitor Assistant (PMA) does not read your emails. It only needs basic identity info (name, age, city) to scrub you from public data brokers. However, because you noticed a prompt to sync a Google or Microsoft account and saw a “Trusted” area disappear, your setup is tied to Norton’s Online Account Cleaner or Safe Email add-ons .
Here is exactly what is happening under the hood, how your privacy is affected, and how to fix it.
Does Norton Read Your Emails?
PMA Alone: No. Standard PMA only searches public people-search directories. It does not touch your inbox.
Online Account Cleaner Add-on: Yes, if synced. If you agree to link your Google or Microsoft email, the setup explicitly requests permission to “Read, compose, and send emails” . It does this to scan your inbox history, find old commercial accounts you signed up for, and send automated deletion requests on your behalf.
Safe Email Feature: Yes. This scans incoming messages specifically to flag phishing and scams. The “human review” box you unchecked is an option where Norton employees review flagged text to improve their AI filters. Disconnecting it was the right choice for your privacy.
Do You Have to Sync Accounts?
No, it is optional. You do not have to sync your Google or Microsoft email to use the core Privacy Monitor Assistant.
If you refuse the email sync, the Online Account Cleaner part of the software will simply stop tracking your commercial company accounts. The core data-broker scrubbing tool will continue working perfectly fine just using your name and address.
Why Did Your “Trusted” Accounts Disappear?
The “Trusted” list disappeared because you disconnected the Safe Email App .
Norton’s ecosystem relies on the active email sync connection to remember what accounts belong to you.
When you revoked the connection or turned off permissions, the cloud-based scanner lost access to its data cache. It could no longer verify those 12 legitimate businesses, wiping them from the dashboard view.
Action Plan: How to Keep PMA Without the Privacy Intrusion
If you want Norton to clean public records but stay completely out of your personal inbox, take these steps:
Unlink Your Email Infrastructure: Go to your Norton Account Settings, look for Linked Accounts , and click Unlink next to your Google or Microsoft account.
Revoke App Permissions Directly:
For Google: Go to your Google Account Security Settings, select “Third-party apps with account access,” find Norton, and click Remove Access .
For Microsoft: Go to your Microsoft Privacy Dashboard and revoke permissions there.
Use Only Core PMA: Open your Norton dashboard, navigate to Privacy Monitor , and run a manual scan. Submit your removal requests using only your text data (Name/City/State), leaving the email-scanning toggles turned off.
The Norton Products Privacy Notice works alongside the master Gen Digital General Privacy Notice to explain exactly how Norton collects, processes, and stores data across its different security tools. Because Norton operates as a subsidiary of Gen Digital.
Data Categories & Strict Retention Windows
Norton categorizes what it collects into distinct buckets, each tied to an exact data deletion timeline:
Account Enrollment Data: Your name, email address, phone number, and physical address are kept while active or for 36 months after your subscription ends. Date of birth is held for 6 months .
Security & Threat Data: Includes URLs or websites visited, system log configurations, and crash diagnostics to protect devices. This telemetry is automatically retained for 36 months .
Product Usage & Telemetry: Metrics like the number of successful scans, screen navigation flows, and general app events are kept for 50 months to help optimize application performance.
Location Data: Processes regional information strictly to set the correct app language and determine where cyber threats originate.
Email & Add-on Specific Policies
As discussed with tools like the Online Account Cleaner or Safe Email , the privacy notice outlines explicit rules for content scanning:
Suspicious Content Logs: If Norton Safe Email is active, suspicious or malicious email messages are retained in raw form for 30 days .
Anonymization Rule: After the initial 30 days, Norton is required to scrub all personal identifiers from those logged emails so they can only be used as aggregated data to train AI threat detection models.
Reported Threats: Email items you manually flag and report as phishing scams are held for up to 1 year .
The No-Logs VPN Framework
If your bundle includes Norton VPN , it operates under a strictly partitioned, independently audited privacy notice that completely differs from general security tools:
Zero Tracking: The VPN uses a strict no-logs policy verified by external third-party security auditors like Versprite .
Data Non-Existence: It explicitly does not log, track, or store your browsing history, traffic destinations, temporary device IP addresses, session duration, or DNS queries.
Anonymized Diagnostics: To manage global server capacity, it logs only the day you connect (not the time) and the specific server location used, which is held for 18 months .
To submit a formal Data Subject Request (DSR) to Norton and its parent company, Gen Digital, you can either interact directly with your online account portal or use their dedicated web form. This allows you to request a full downloadable report of the data they have collected on you, or demand the deletion of specific data profiles.
Option 1: The Official Privacy Request Form
Norton processes global data privacy requests through an official, secure OneTrust portal.
Go directly to the online Norton Privacy Requests Form .
Select Customer when prompted for your relationship.
Choose your specific Request Type :
Provide a Copy of My Data: To receive a full, portable copy of the exact personal information Norton currently holds.
Delete My Data: To wipe personal records and accounts from their system.
Fill in your name, contact email address, and country of residence.
Verify by Email: Look for a confirmation email immediately after submitting, as Norton will not process the request until you click the security validation link.
Option 2: The Self-Service Dashboard (Faster Deletion)
If you prefer to delete your collected product and account data instantly without waiting for an agent to process a form, you can execute it straight from your user settings:
Log into the web portal via the My Norton Portal.
In the top-right corner, hover over My Account and select Privacy Options .
Click the Delete My Data action button.
Confirm through the on-screen prompt and enter the secondary verification code texted or emailed to you.
(Note: While initial internal processing begins immediately, full system scrubbing across their distributed cloud infrastructure takes up to 30 days.)
Option 3: Direct Email Correspondence
If you have highly specific requests—such as telling Norton to wipe the email search history data from the Online Account Cleaner but leaving your core anti-malware account completely untouched—you can email their privacy compliance team directly:
Gen Digital Global Privacy Team Email: nll_privacy@gendigital.com
What to include: State your full name, the primary email address registered to your Norton 360 subscription, and explicitly list the data buckets you want them to isolate or delete.

bjm,
Thank you for the information. It will take me some time to absorb it, but I will indeed make any changes that I need. I’ll go back and mark as solution later.
