Norton product message - while in Metro UI (Win8/8.1)

I have previously reported this in beta testing: http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-360-Norton-Internet/quot-Click-here-for-a-Norton-product-message-quot-appears-in/td-p/989841 This is still a problem in the latest version.

This metro notification pops up randomly and it is happening at least once a week. When I click on it I am taken to the desktop but that's all, no other Norton dialog opens.

Also, there is nothing in the Security History about this "attention - product message".

I have attached an export of fresh NIS installation Full History txt after this happened.

NIS 21.1.0.18 (Requested from Tony Weiss, not beta)

Happens on Windows 8 and also on Windows 8.1.

I've had the exact same thing happening in Windows 8 metro. When I click on the message it just takes me to the desktop and then there's no message. I'm running NIS version 21.0.1.3 (final, not beta).

I am now on Windows 8.1 RTM build 9600 and still having these pop-ups with NIS 21.1.0.18:

Hi,
I don't think that the RTM build is the final build so there's a possibility of things working less than perfectly. You might want to update to the final released version and see if that helps

Keep us posted

I'm using the final version of Windows 8.1 and also installed all Windows Updates.

The full build string is: 9600.16404.x86fre.winblue_gdr.130913-2141

Any progress on this issue? I'm still getting the non-working pop-ups.

FWIW...

I was also getting these orphaned message popups back when I was testing the NIS v21 beta builds under both the Win8.1 betas and the Win8.1 consumer preview.

Just prior to the official Oct 17 Win8.1 release I restored that test system to a (pre Win8.1 preview / NISv21 beta) disc image from earlier in the year that was comprised of Win8.0 and NISv20.  I then installed the Oct 17 Win8.1 Upgrade via the Apps Store, then a few days later updated the NIS v20 to v21 (using the "Check for New Version" function).

I have not experienced any of the orphaned NIS popups on that system since.

Kind regards,

John

Hi,

From what I know, there is an option that is present on NIS for Win 8 and Win 8.1 about Norton special offers notifications.
To avoid having the pop up, you only need to unckeck special offers from the NIS GUI:
Settings -> General -> Other settings and uncheck special offers notifications, or something like this. Since I use NIS Italian version, I don't know exactly how this is written for the English GUI.

Since I removed this checkmarks, I no longer received the pop up that you mentioned.

Hope this helps.

Sandro

Sandro may well be right in regard to the Special Offer Notification tab.  Fwiw, I've always had it turned off and have not received any such notices....

Thanks for your comment, F4E

I know that pop up doesn't appear to all users, I wanted to give this suggestion as this is what I found with my computer running Windows 8.1, maybe this could help those who are randomly having the same issue. Perhaps there could be other factors that I really don't know that could be related to that.
BTW, reading your post I noticed that you're using Windows 7 where the issue doesn't occur.

Can you please let me know if you are also using Win 8/8.1 please.

Thanks,
Sandro

I too was testing the 8.1 preview (b9431) + NIS 21 betas, but when the beta testing finished, I completely reinstalled Win8.1 RTM (Enterprise Evaluation) + NIS 21.1 and I'm still getting these.

Thanks for the idea, but actually this option is present in all supported OS's (XP - 8.1), and not only for Win 8.x

It was turend on by default, I now changed it to off state, and will monitor if the pop ups stop appearing.

But it is still interesting why nothing happens when the pop up is clicked.

Hi tbalint444444,

It is correct, honestly, I haven't explained properly in my previous post. So, yes, it is true, this option is present in all supported OS's, but what I meant to say is that the pop-up never appears in OS's other than Windows 8 / 8.1, regardless of whether this option is checked or not in the Special Offer Notification tab of NIS.

Like you said, try to leave this option unchecked, to see if the problem is still present.

Sandro

Hi All,

Unfortunately this didn't help. I turned the special offer notification off last week, but I'm still having this problem.

The only that changed is, I switched from NIS to N360.

n360_message.png

Screenshot from N360 2014 Settings page showing that "Special offer notification" is turned off.

n360_settings.png

"Értesítés különleges ajánlatokról" means Special offer notification and "Kikapcsolva" means Turned Off. (I am using a localized version of N360)

It might point Norton in the right direction to know what the special offer was for ?

Like a new versions or buy Norton at a special price or ......

Just a thought.

I think the OP's point is that you can never find out what the offer is - you just get the notice that there's a message - which you in turn cannot access...

FWIW; Back during the beta cycles (of both v21 and Win 8.1) I was getting the same notice popups, but never shown any subsequent information - as the OP stated, clicking the notice only serves to take you from the Metro (AKA Start Screen) UI or current Metro App (if your in one) to the Desktop  - that's all.  Nothing is recorded in the Norton product History regarding either the notice or the reason for showing the notice.

Kind regards,

John

And that was fully clean install - not an in-place (over the top) install?

Another thought - Did you happen to use the Easy Transfer Tool to migrate your User Settings / Files / Personalizations, etc.  from the test configuration?  I've had to deal with some less than desired results caused by the use of that tool from time to time.

Kind regards,

John

avj,

Yes -- sorry I missed that aspect .....

It's correct, John

Myself, when I was getting the popup, nothing was happening except to switch from Metro (Start) to the desktop.

The mystery is still unsolved, and even though I'm not getting it more, I'd like to know what should be the purpose of

this utility  :smileyfrustrated:

Hi tbalint444444,

I'm sorry it didn't work.

However, we have tried, even with no luck.

At the time I assumed it was something that Norton was testing with the betas, but that time has now passed.

And this is why I asked, and am currently waiting for the OP's reply on, if they did do a fully clean install and/or if a settings migration tool was used after the installation.  My thinking is that somehow there may still be some "beta traits" left behind that are causing the popups to persist.

Kind regards,

John
