Norton Products no longer working on My iMac

I installed the Norton Internet Security suite on my iMac (OS 10.5.8) 2 months ago and it been working very well.  Today I attempted to launch the Antivirus GUI and I got a msg saying "Norton AntiVirus could not open its preferences."  I found that all the Norton tools were saying the same thing.  I rebooted, uninstalled and reinstalled but I get the same result.

 

I have downloaded and run the "special" uninstaller.  This did not help.

 

Has anyone encountered this before?  Any ideas?

Had you done any disk repair recently?  In particular I wonder if "Repair Permissions" might have been involved somehow.  If you can, would you follow the instructions here?
