Norton Protection Blog Popup

Here is a link to a popup that appears to be coming from Norton.  I don't know why I'm getting this or how to stop it.  I attempted to log in on the webpage, but got an error message.

I was puzzled by the -13 also.

Sorry about the URL -- I got the error just now when I tried it -- although the title which is also an active link worked for me.

Thanks for the heads up.  I have automatic update set for Microsoft and it posted the info you gave on 09/15/16.  My IE  is the same version as yours but doesn't have 13 on the end.

BTW, I got a 404 server error for the link you gave, but I was able to find the info on the Microsoft webpage.

On my WinXP I have Firefox and IE.  When I opened the offending webpage Firefox was the default browser.

I could be wrong, but that makes me think it's not a browser problem.

Thanks for your thoughts.

PMJI but I just had reason to check my IE11 under Windows 7 so there has been a very recent bunch of critical updates from Microsoft including the one I give more details of in my message here:  Permalink

Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit  IE version is:  11.0.9600.1844913 and under that it adds that it has this Update Version:

The most severe of the vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user views a specially crafted webpage using Internet Explorer. ... The update addresses the vulnerabilities by correcting how Internet ...  >>

The actual date of September 13 2016 and it must have come with a bunch of about 4 the other day.

You can find the detailed version number if you check Help / About on the IE Command Bar when it is open .

There have been some Cumulative Updates for Windows 7 over time which would catch up on any missing so the earlier failures may have been corrected if those were applied.

I have malwarebytes but for some reason it didn't start after re-start.  Turned it on, did scan, last update to log was in 06/2015.  While it was running I turned on my WinXP pc.  Malwarebyes was on and running.

On the screen was the same Norton popup.  It's a large white and lime green notice titled "Dangers of Software with the explanation of:

"A software vulnerability, usually a security hole or weakness found in an operation system or software program.  Keeping current with the latest updates is an effective preventive measure for your internet security."  There are two choices to click, one being "See what to do".  I clicked on this, and the browser opened to the same webpage previously shown above.  The blog is written by Nadia Kovacs, Admin Employee (bold red background) posted 03-Nov-2014 Edited: 03-Aug-2016.  Several comments written in 2015 &16 state they attemped to download and nothing happened.

Thanks for your help!

Paulette

Hi, Paulette. It's possible you've had a browser redirect issue.

I'd suggest downloading and running the FREE version of Malwarebytes to see if it finds anything.

If it does and quarantines it, it's safe to leave it there.

https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/

Let us know if that fixes it. If not, we can investigate further.

Thanks for responding.

OS is Win7, I'm using Norton Security and yes, computer has been restarted.

After posting, I did notice something odd.  On the Subject line, I copied directly from the webpage, there are oriental language letters before the words Norton Protection.  Those are not the webpage.,

Btw, this isn't the first time this has popped up.  The first time I just deleted without opening.

Look forward to your thoughts.

Paulette

Hi, Paula. What is your operating system, and Norton product ? Have you restarted your computer ?
