Norton Register cleaner and Unable to start Bluetooth stack service

Just to let people know who has Bluetooth and gets this error, its all down to Norton 360 register clean deleting Bluetooth keys out of the registry and breaking your Bluetooth.

The first time it happened I had used the Norton 360 utility. To repair it I just did a system roll-back, as Norton before doing a registry clean, makes a restore point.

The second time, Norton has somehow deleted the keys again, as I checked my history. It did this without me telling it to. Again I have restored to before Norton touched my Registry.

First time I blamed myself for trusting it. Second time.. has me thinking its time to cancel my subscription to Norton and move on.

So if you get this problem then rollback. Also do not bother contacting live support, all the dude did was update my virus checker definitions and then had no clue how to handle my problem.

Its well documented on Microsoft site if you need help.

Hi, Mechlsd,

Welcome to our community; sorry it's under such circumstances.

Please do not blame Norton for what has transpired: registry cleaners are inherently dangerous, because they depend on programmers to have properly documented the changes they make to your registry when they install--and even then, when some third program notices a key present that it needs too, you can end up with a situation where removing what looks like trash (say, an orphaned key relating to Bluetooth, after the application that originally installed it has been removed) ends up messing up several other programs that decided to use it too.

That's why Norton creates those restore points, which you wisely used.

Note also that Norton's registry cleaner is actually among the least aggressive, for this very reason. A couple of months back, we saw a rash of customers who had used another registry cleaner, showing up with all sorts of stuff trashed after it identified a  couple hunderd "registry errors" that Norton had "missed." And that product evidently hadn't thought it needed any "steenkin' restore points!"

Sorry you had a bad experience with Live Chat. They're very helpful and responsive--but while they're wizards with things like subscription issues, they're not so much when it comes to technical support. For that, you're much better off coming here, where you'll find folks who, like me, have been using Norton products for over twenty years, and building computers in their back rooms since the days of DOS!

Thanks for posting your cautionary note. Perhaps it will encourage other users to give some additional thought to whether the issues they think they're having are worth the risk of running a registry cleaner.

But if they decide they are, Norton remains the safest route to go!

Actually, I would have gone into my Settings > Task Scheduling > and unchecked  Registry Cleaner.  That way there is no registry cleaning (which IMHO is overrated anyway and in most cases unnecessary on a regulary scheduled basis) and that would also prevent your bluetooth from being broken.  Also, another reason I do not use the N 360 Registry cleaner is because as you have observed - it deletes items prior to checking with the user.

Hey, thanks for the tip to disable the Registry Cleaner. Now it will not do it without me asking... Phew. That makes me feel better. Was very annoyed about it doing it with me requesting it second time. All is kewl now thanks.

Glad you are a happy camper - it's reasons like this that we enjoy sharing the not so obvious ways of using the program's settings to one's advantage!  :smileywink:
