Norton Removal Tool error

I intermittently get an "error 8506,430" message in Norton AV when my PC starts up and the One Click Support page is displayed. If I follow the instructions to download the run the Norton Removal Tool, I get this error when I run the removal tool:

c:\documents and settings\username\desktop\norton_removal_tool.exe

The specified path does not exist.

Check the path and then try again.

Of course, the path exists. I'm an administrator, I've tried turning off firewall/AV, tried running it from different locations etc but get the same message. I can run other exe files OK.

How can I run the removal tool?

Hi jswaffs,

Can you try downloading and saving the removal tool to your desktop from this location?

Wow, prompt response, thanks but I found a work around solution before I read your post. I tried opening the file in WinZip, which correctly detected the removal tool wasn't an archive and prompted me to run it instead. I accepted this option and the removal tool uninstalled the Norton product.

The removal tool prompted for a reboot and once I logged back on, downloaded and reinstalled the Norton product. Everything seems to be OK.

I can't explain why I was unable to run the Norton Removal Tool by double-clicking it though as the error was't repeatable with other executables.

Hi jswaffs,

Glad to hear that you were able to solve your own problem. You can mark this thread solved by choosing your own post as the solution :-)
