Norton Removal Tool is removing my digital camera driver

Hello!

When I run NRT it messes with the driver for my Fujifilm FinePix F100fd. When I connect it via USB device manager shows the following...

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

...and I have to reinstall the driver. If any Norton boffins want to troubleshoot this feel free to shoot me a PM.

is happened to me too

It caused the portable devices in device manager to show a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the middle

Just to add background could you:

Give us some more information about your system:

What version of Windows are you using including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 64 bit as well as the Name and Version ID of the Norton product that you are using -- Help / About is where that is, in the format of nn.nn.nn.nnn

If you have the COMCAST version of Norton 360 / Security Suite and not the normal commercial version please be sure to tell us.

Was there a particular reason to run the Norton Removal Tool? It is not intended for routine use but only for dealing with a problem situation or corrupted uninstall ?

Hello huwyngr,

I was using NAV 2011 (v18.1.0.37) on a fully patched Windows 7 64-bit. Norton uninstalled without any issues, but I ran NRT just to make sure everything was removed as I was planning on installing a different security product.

Edit: I was using what I believe to be the latest version of NRT: 2011.0.1.9

do you try one time or many time?does everytime NRT delete your Digicam driver?

I repeated the process a few times to make sure NRT was causing it.

which operting system do you using?

Hi MellonCollie,

The same issue was reported recently for Roxio.  There are definitely some instances where changes to the system made by Norton that are undone by the NRT can affect a third party application.  This is why use of the Norton Removal Tool is recommended only in specific situations.

Thanks for the details.

As SendoJive has stated one reason we do not recommend using the NRT for routine purposes is that there have been a few reports of unwanted file removal which in one case was triggered by bad programming in the "innocent party".

That's not just an attempt to blame someone else but it's a situation I've encountered myself that Norton eventually pinned down, not with NRT but where an update to Norton 360 apparently broke the context menu in some third party programs and this only happened if N360 was there. But the third party found something, issued a fix and from then on there were no problems with N360 ....

But in your case if you are changing security programs -- sure we can't help you change your mind? -- it would be a valid use so I guess the solution is to reinstall the camera program and not run NRT again.

I'm not changing for good! I uninstalled NAV to test/report a bug in another piece of security software, but NAV's back on my system right now as I type this message. :smileyhappy: The NRT issue isn't a big deal for me (only takes a sec to reinstall the camera driver) but I thought I'd report it anyway.

That's a relief! How wise you are .... <g>

Thanks for the report -- we know that Norton are aware of the happening and they do revise the tools as needed so let's hope they cn pin it down to something they can deal with by programming.
