Hi Minhil,
Can you tell us if your purchased N360 from a retail store or direct from Symantec?
To prepare your dad's computer for the installation of Norton, as quads has stated, you will have to thoroughly remove McAfee first.
Please follow these instructions for the correct removal procedure of McAfee. - http://service.mcafee.com/faqdocument.aspx?id=CS41013&lang=en_US&prior_tid=2&AnswerID=16777216&turl==http%3A%2F%2Fkb.mcafee.com%2Finfocenter%2Findex%3Fpage%3Dcontent%26id%3DCS41013%26actp%3Dsearch%26viewlocale%3Den_US
Next is a clean download and installation of N360. Please use this link. - http://www.norton.com/n360s_6 for the standard edition, and http://www.norton.com/n360p_6 for the premium version.
You will need your Product Key to activate.
Remember to run Live Update, rebooting where required, until no more updates are offered.
Please let us know how you get on.
Cheers, Dave.
My dad don't even use Mcafee. Is it still going to cause conflict?

Hi,
Using or abusing are not part of the problem. The fact that there is another active security product on the computer makes it impossible for Norton to install and operate correctly. Both programs do pretty much the same thing. This means that they must occupy the same places in the system. Since that isn't possible you must choose one or the other and be very sure that the one not being used is completely removed.
We'll be here when you need us
Thanks. One last thing. Could you explain why both norton and mcafee comes with my computer?
My computer is :
Microsoft Windows XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
Computer manufacturers usually bundle trial software with new systems. It is possible that McAffee was installed this way, and now you want to install Norton, you are finding this problem.

Is it possible that the Norton program that came with this PC is actually a trial version of Norton Online Backup? My Acer laptop came pre-installed with McAfee security and NOB trial.
Thanks, Dave.

You began by asking about yoru dad's computer --- is this now yours that has both?
Can you give the make and exact model ID of your computer so I can check it out for details. But it's not a new PC is it? Are you sure both came with the PC?
The model is gateway 838gm
Minhil wrote:The model is gateway 838gm
I thought it went back a bit! I've no idea why Gateway should have included two different security programs except that that was a long time ago and life was much simpler.
According to this old CNET review it included McAfee AntiSpyware 2005 (Trial) , Norton Internet Security 2005 (Trial) in the preinstalled software.
What versions do you have installed now? That matters in getting rid of them.
I'd suggest you clean up McAfee using the information in this document: http://mcafee-removal-tool.com/
But I'm not sure what you should do if you still have NIS 2005 installed since it is not listed for the Norton Removal Tool that does not go back before 2006.
I find it hard to believe that you have not updated so please fill in the gaps.
I got norton 2012
Minhil wrote:I got norton 2012
I'm still confused ... at one moment you mention your Dad's computer and then you say My Computer ...
Is it one computer with both McAfee and Norton on or is it two computers?
Is McAfee still visibly installed or are you just asking why it came originally?
Have you installed the Norton 2012?
Is is Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus? Or is it Norton 360 which is the Forum you posted in?
We can't see what you have so you need to tell us clearly and then we can try and give some directions........
I mean my dad got norton 2012 360. Only my dad's computer got mcafee and norton. I uninstall mcafee on my dad's computer because norton needs it to be uninstall. I need to know why it needs to be uninstall but that is solved. I need to know why both mcafee and norton both come with my dad's computer.

The only people who can tell you that are Gateway Computers who sold the PC.
As I said, back in 2005 things were much more simple and maybe the two did not interfere with each other ...... why worry?
Is everything working smoothly now?
Thanks.
