Norton Safe Search Question

I have a strange problem when using Norton Safe Search. I begin typing the search term and the automatic fill in box pops up with search suggestions. TYhat's fine, however, after typing in several letters and the search suggestions filling in the box, I cannot type anymore letters without clicking with my cursor in the search box after the last letter of the search term that I was typing. It is annoying. Is there a way to eliminate this issue?

I am not sure that I explained my problem correctly. I don't necessarly want to turn the safe search suggestions off. Here is an example of the problem. Let's say I want to search the word canopeners. I begin to type the word in the safe search bar. After typing the first 3 letters, c a n, the suggestion box pops up with a list of terms beginning with c a n. However, I cannot type any additional letters without using the mouse and left clicking after the letter n in the safge search box which returns the cursor. Then I can type the remainder of my search word, in this case "opener". Very annoying.

Hi, Jackb1. I understand what you were syaing about the Safe Search box function. I was suggesting the alternative as a way of still being able to browse safely.

However as I don't use Safe Search or Identity Safe, maybe one of my fellow users who does, can help you out.

This has been reported to Norton and duplicated - no idea when or what will/might fix it!

Just like to agree with JackB1: the suggestions are sometimes useful but more than outweighed by the annoyance of merrily typing away and then looking up to see that only 4 or 5 characters have been captured in the search box.

I had this exact problem on two computers running Norton 360.  After searching and trying just about everything, I finally uninstalled and reinstalled Norton 360 on both computers.  The problem disappeared, so far.  You might give this try yourself.

Hebrews' solution may well work if the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool is used, since it replaces the current install with a clean one.

Might be worth a try.

I did use the Norton removal and reinstall tool.  Like I said the problem disappeared, so far.  “So far” has ended.  The problem returned on both computers.  Back to the drawing board.

:smileysad: As yank said Symantec is aware of the problem, and working towards a fix.

Is there any resolution or up date to this issue?

Hi, Hebrews. No word as yet as to when this will be fixed. It may be via a patch, or in the next update.

We just have to be patient, while Symantec investigates.

Yesterday, 3/17, I performed my usual Norton 360 Live Update and a patch was installed.  I opened IE11 and started typing in the Safe Search search engine.  It appears, at least for now, the patch solved the problem.  However, I have a second, duplicate computer running through the same router/modem and running Norton 360 as well as Norton Safe Search on which I experienced the same search problem.  Again, I ran Live Update.  On this computer Live Update did not offer a patch to install and the search problem still exists.  Please explain.

Because it's being sent out in phased manner.

You can read about it in the announcement.

Just because your systems use the same router doesn't mean they both should have got it at once.

Thank You.  I did not know about the phased released.

Oh well sad

You probably nailed the reason.

I understand Norton may use it to generate revenue so that is okay.

Probably not likely to change any time soon.

Thank you, yes I realize that. My concern is  the Ask search engine. I just wish Google or Bing were used as default for Norton Safe Search. Ask is a dinosaur engine that has been labeled as malware in the past especially when it functioned as a toolbar. I understand Norton may use it to generate revenue so that is okay.

You can choose whatever default search engine you want for your searches in the browser's address bar. If you click on and use the Norton Safe Search feature, you will be using the Ask search engine. No customization is available.

Hi and thanks for your response. We are talking default search "engines" not "browsers". Sorry for any confusion. I understand the possible motives for using Ask as default. I just wish it was more in tune with times for those who like using "Safe Search" on a consistent basis.
