I went to the page you suggested, but none of the situations listed are what is happening in my case.

I am using Norton Safety Minder on a Macintosh. I notice that no activity was being shown, so I logged into my child's user account and looked under the Norton Safety Minder toolbar icon. It said that the Minder had been disabled and almost all the options were grayed out. I tried enabling them again through the website, but no luck.

The only way to get it to work again is to un-install and then re-install. However, this only seems to solve the issue for a couple days or so. I then have to uninstall and reinstall again. That is a bit annoying, not to mention that my son's user account goes unmonitored for several days.

I would really like to see this fixed since I like this better than the built in Parental Controls on the Mac. Please help.

Hi tokyotony,

Please make sure the kid doesn’t have the Administer rights on the MC computer (“Allow user to administer this computer” box should be unchecked under system Preferences/Accounts).  Otherwise, the kid is able to disable Norton Safety Minder.

Thanks,

Katie

KatieQ,

He definitely doesn't have Administer rights. Also note, I do on the entire computer, and I still have to re-install to get it to work again.

It simply quits working and the options in the toolbar grey out, and the Settings page on the internet still shows that he is being monitored.

Regards,

Tony

Hi tokyotony,

Could you also make sure the kid doesn’t have the parent’s email address and password that are used to log into OnlineFamily.Norton.  The kid can use these information to disable NSM.

We recommend that no other parental-control programs should be installed on the computers where Norton Safety Minder is installed.

Thanks,

Katie

My son is 7 years old and he doesn't know my (the parent) login or password unless he is starting to get good at hacking a computer. Moreover, if it were just a simple matter of using my login and password, I should be able to easier turn monitoring back on, yes? In my case, I can't. I have to actually un-install and re-install.

No other parental-control programs are installed.

Online it works but it doesn't block sites and I have the block the site on under the childs profile.  I'm getting warnings but it lets you go the site anyway.  also I'm haven't recieved one e-mail of notification and that is on as well.  Help, this is a good tool if it works?

beckybec,

Please make sure you log into PC with your kid's Windows account, which is being monitored and he has similar settings for Web Site Settings on Onlinefamily.norton.

Thanks,

Katie

How do you expect to keep children from turning off Norton Safety Minder when you put a turn off button right on the task bar icon? how do I get rid of this turn off feature that allows children to turn it off right from the drop down of thetask bar icon. I keep getting notices that my daughter has turn off Safety Minder but you make it easy putting a turn-off button right in front of them (not smart thinking) you should at lease have that button password protected or not have it at all.Put it where the parents sign into their online account so only they can turn it off. What’s the sense of calling it sefety if you give them the tools to turn it off when they want to?Can someone please find a way to correct this software mistake my daughter’s just turning 18 but not too smart about surfing the internet and safety on it they think having all these friends and associates cool and not knowing who they really are anyone can tell you what they want you to hear!or believe. So is there a way to disable the turn off button when clicking the Norton Safety Minder icon on the task barand she has a limited account?

Hi pwforever,

Once she selects “Disable Safety Minder” option, she will be asked to enter Parent Email and Parent Password, which are the email address and password that you used when you created your OnlineFmily.Norton account.  Your daughter is not supposed to know them.

I installed Norton Safety Minder last week but it has stopped working.  my son who is 10 logged onto his user account and although he has been given one hour per day and had not used the computer for a while it said he had 60 seconds left  then logged him out.  I tried to give him extra time but it won't accept the parent email/password.

I have tried going back into the original settings to see what was happening but although it lets me sign in to norton as soon as i am there all the users have disappeared.  i added them again but it has not linked the children and parent with their user accounts as it did when originally set up and keeps telling me to download safety minder again to set how each person accesses the computer.  When i try and do this it downloads then when i try and run it i get asked for parent email and password to uninstall product.  I do not want to uninstall but entered the details required anyway so i could maybe uninstall then reinstall but it says the details are incorrect and not registered.  Please help as i cannot do anything with it now.

I am using windows vista and also have norton 360 installed.

Hi,

After receiving an email notification that my daughter (8) who does NOT have access to my Norton Online username and password had turned off the safety minder (the activity was logged at 2 minutes before midnight and said child had been fast asleep for hours), i logged onto the computer in question and discovered that the safety minder was no longer running and/or accessible to run. It appeared to have been removed from the Programs altogether.

I then attempted to reinstall from the webpage as per instructions but it keeps on failing with multiple instances of the message "SxS Framework Custom Action has stopped working" after which the installer uninstalls all of the norton online components.

I have tried this 3 times now with the same result.

End result is this computer is not able to run parent controls.

I have the Safety minder still working on two other computers in the house (albeit one of those has told me it was turned off when no one was logged on).

How do i get the minder back on this computer?

It is running Vista Home Premium SP2. A fault has been logged with Symantec after each failed installation.

Please advise.

Thanks
Peter

Hi Katie, I'm having the same problem re-installing NSM.  It was deleted from the computer after a problem with NIS2009 and Now I am unable to re-install the program the app stops installing during the Installing Drivers part of install with the error:

SxS Framework Custom Action has stopped working

NIS2009 has been re-installed with no problems, OS is Vista sp2.

Please advise on any suggestions to get app re-installed, NSM is a tool that no parent should be without!

Thanks in advanced,

-Alex

H Avg99,

We are not able to reproduce it in house.  If you like, I’ll be more than happy to setup a remote desktop access and check into the issue.  You're welcome to send me a private message or an email.  You can find my email address at http://community.norton.com/norton/profile?user.id=15038 (The forum doesn't allow users to indicate email addresses and personal information).

Help please!

Same sort of problem here.  I installed the Safety Minder, adding a couple of user accounts on my PC for my daughters in the process.  Everything worked great initially, until I set up passwords for all of the Windows user accounts.  Now there is zero web monitoring and blocking, although the Safety Minder indicates that it is running under their user accounts.  I have verified that they have restricted accounts in Windows (no administrator rights).  I have completely uninstalled and resinstalled a couple of times.  No difference.  I am operating this in conjunction with Norton Internet Security 2009.

Hi eel0465,

There are different issues in the same thread, so I am not quite sure the exact issue when you said "same sort of problem here".  Could you tell me if you also get the error "SxS Framework Custom Action has stopped working", or just the monitoring activity doesn't work right after you add passwords for all of the Windows accounts.

What version of Norton Safety Minder do you have?

Thanks,

Katie
