Norton Online Family with Norton Safety Minder won't let a browser based Java application run.
After installing the lastest Java version from java.com (Version 7 Update 4), Norton Safety Minder(NSM) won't let Java run on any website that uses it. Even Java's test page at http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp says that it cannot run.
At the beginning I though it was a firewall and/or antivirus (Norton 360) related issue but after turning both OFF and letting NSM stay installed, the problem persisted. It wasn't until I uninstalled NSM that problem with Java went away. Even turning off NSM on a protected account maks a browser based Java app fail. Problem happens with any browser, IE, Chrome, etc. Problems occurs regardless of the Windows account being used, either mine with full admin priviledges or the child accounts monitored/controlled by NSM.
What needs to be done to make Norton Safety Minder and Java work together since my child needs access to some educational websites with Java apps ??

No, no messages from NSM when accessing Java's test page. The message from the Java app is:
ClassNotFoundException
testJava2_1.TestVMApplet.class
IE version 9.0.8112.16421; Update Versions 9.0.6
Chrome version 19.0.1084.52
All this running on Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits SP1
If you google this Java error, it usually points to an antivirus/firewall problem. That's why I reinstalled Java with Norton360 turned off, but that didn't help. It wasn't until I uninstalled NSM that the problem went away. But I had to reinstall NSM so Norton Online Family could work so I can enforce parental controls, but when I did, Java stopped working again.
I'm still getting used to all this so I hope this reply is what you are looking for. My son had trouble with this, too. After some research I was able to determine that it was a problem with Java 7. When we uninstalled Java 7 and went back to 6 everything worked fine.
Even though it's good to know Java 6 works with NSM, for those of us who have other apps that need Java 7, this is not a workaround that will work. I'm sorry, but Java 7 has been out since July 2011, ie, a year ago, and there have been 6 updates since then so there has been plenty of time for Norton to replicate/fix/test/deploy a fix for this problem.
Is not that Java is an obscure language/deployment environment nobody uses....
I am also having the exact same problems as octavioa and am frustrated that such a critical program seems to be incompatible with NSM. Hopefully this can be fixed soon :/
You said "I have the same issue with Java and this happened after the latest updates...". Are the latest updates you refer to Norton Safety Minder or Java? What version is it?
I assume if Norton Safety Minder is disabled on the PC, then the tutoring program works again?
I installed NSM and it broke my child's Minecraft. Uninstalled Java 7u5 and installed Java 6u33 and it works now. Will we be notified via email newsletter when this issue has been resolved?
You've been saying "We are checking the issue" for many months now since I reported this problem back in May, ie, 4 months ago.
Since many people have reported the issue after me, it's clear THIS IS A PRODUCT DEFECT, ie, a bug that NEEDS to be fixed. The problem is VERY EASY to reproduce since the user ONLY has to install Java 7 and go to ANY website that uses Java while using NSM. Even Oracle's own Java test page doesn't work.
It's amazing Norton is still going around in circles about this without fully recognizing the problem and actually fixing it.
