Norton Safety works on one computer but not another

Here is my story.  We gave my son a laptop recently and I installed Norton Safety reminder on his laptop.  We have roadrunner internet provider and it works as expected.  I tested by typing "sex" and no porn website came up.  Even when I got to a link, NSR stopped it.  I was happy.

Here is the problem.  My son goes over to my parents often and gets on the computer often.  So I installed NSR on their computer.  They have ATT DSL.  To make the story short, NSR would not block me from getting into porn site.

Just wonder if someone can give me insight of what the problem is.

Thanks

Edit: one more piece of information.  I recently reinstalled winxp on a laptop for my sister.  Also installed NSR on her laptop and tested it working at my house (with roadrunner).  When I brought it to my parents and connect to their internet, NSR also failed to block.

Both my parents' PC as well as my sister's PC are running winxp.  I tested on both IE and firefox on both PC's and NSR failed to block.

Hi nartac,

1. Please make sure you log onto your parents' PC or your sister's PC as the account, which is associated with the profile that you monitor in your Norton Online Family Account.

2. What Security product(s), Web browser(s) and version on your parents' PC?

3. What Security Product(s), Web browser(s) and version on your sister's PC?

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Thanks,

Katie

Thanks for the reply.

My parents have ATT DSL with 2wire 2701HG-B modem with latest firmware.

Both machines are currently running Windows XP SP3 32bit  with .NET framework 3.5 sp1 installed.  Currently has only Symantec AV installed on both so no firewall except for whatever firewall the modem has.

I have tested both internet explorer 8 and latest version of firefox on both machines and NSR didn't work.

As of today 8-27-2010 I brought my son's laptop running Windows 7 32 bit that I had installed NSR previously to my parents.  I tested going to youtube (which I added as one of the sites my son can't go to) as well as pornography sites.  His laptop can log into those sites at my parents as I connected to their internet wirelessly.

With the same laptop at my house running roadrunner with a linksys router, all pornography sites are blocked as well as any youtube sites.

I suspect it has to do with 2wire modem?????

Hi nartac,

What version of Symantec AV is installed on your parents' and sister's PCs?   The program is not compatible with Symantec AV 10.  Please check out the link below for details. http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&ssfromlink=true&docurl=20090508145137EN

If Symantec AV 10 is installed on their PCs, please upgrade it to the latest version to see if it helps.  You could also uninstall Symantec AV temporarily and test to see youtube and adult websites get blocked or not.

However above doesn't explain why the same laptop works well at your home, but not at your parents.  That brings my next questions.  What security product(s) are installed on your son's laptop?  Is Symantec AV also installed?

Thanks,

Katie

Hi nartac,

To help you solve the issue, we would like to set up a remote desktop access session with you on your son's laptop at your parents' home(where inappropriate sites don't get blocked).  Please let us know when would be a good time for you.  You're welcome to send me a PC or email.  You can find my email address at http://community.norton.com/t5/user/viewprofilepage/user-id/15038.

Thanks,

Katie

KatieQ,

Wow.  Thanks so much so great support.

I apologize for not able to update earlier as I haven't had a chance to go over to my parents' place until today.  We do have symantec AV 10 installed on all of our computers and you have hinted that Norton online safety is not compatible with symantec AV 10, I uninstalled AV 10 from both my parents' PC and my sister's laptop. Once rebooted, all computers have norton safety working as it should.  I could not get into youtube nor adult sites as per my settings.

It's really unfortunate that Norton Safety is not compatible with AV10 as I really love symantec products.  Guess I have to find an alternative AV to protect the computers.

Again, I appreciate the support.  This is one of the reasons why I always buy Symantec products.

Hi nartac,

Thanks for the update and we are glad it works for you after you uninstall Symantec AV10.

As I mentioned in the previous post, if you update AV 10 to the latest version, it could be compatible with Norton Safety Minder.  Of course you have options to use other security products in the market.   Since you mentioned you love Symantec products, I just let you know there are other Norton security products available that are fully compatible with Norton Safety Minder.  Like Norton 360, Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Thanks,

Katie
