Norton Safeweb intermittent / down?

On occassion over the past 2-3 days I have noticed my norton safeweb ratings stop working. At first it would happen while searching on google where my search results would all come up as gray question marks and upon refreshing they would be corrected. I thought nothing of it at first because it would only happen maybe once a day and quickly go away.

However, at approximately 9:43 AM US CST I again got gray question marks in my search results and upon refreshing the ratings altogether simply dissapeared from the results. Maybe they were having trouble loading? Has safeweb's servers been down at all lately or running slowly? My safeweb ratings have since come back at aprx. 9:46 AM US CST.

NIS 16.5.0.135 (Safeweb ratings, tamper protection, and early load enabled)

Windows XP Home Edition SP3

IE7

2 GB RAM

Preferred search engine: Google

* All scans come out as clean and I am not experiencing any performance issues. I know this is not related to IE8 or any other newer browsers with questionable compatibility because since I reformatted my hard drive months ago I only installed IE7. I am confident that this is not a virus or anything else on my end so has anyone else been experiencing safeweb problems lately (even if they are very small or do not seem like a major problem)?

Hi, prexley,

Thank-you for bringing this to our attention.

Thanks for all of your feedback. Glad to hear that for sure there is nothing wrong on my end.

I can't help but wonder if this has something to due with the new beta version of safeweb that is being tested alongside the 2010 NIS/NAV betas. Maybe some kind of software confliction if both versions are running on the same servers?

Is anyone still experiencing the symptoms I described in my first message?

It is now Saturday August 8th and I still seem to be having occassional problems with norton safeweb. Every so often on Google my search results would not load in the split second they usually would and after about 2-4 seconds of waiting they all come up as gray question marks (which I know is set to happen by default if NIS cannot connect to the safeweb servers). It seems that refreshing the page temporarily fixes this.

I am still confident that this is not a problem on my end and I am hoping someone from symantec could shine some light on the situation.

Same problem here, over the past several days.  As of today, 8/13, it’s really wonky.  As described above, I’ll get all gray question marks on a Google search result page, and refreshing the display will change them all to green checkmarks or to nothing at all.  Going to next page will change them.  Returning to previous page will change them.  It’s not predictable.  At any rate, it renders Safe Web untrustworthy.  This is happening for me on Firefox 3.0.9 and on IE 7.0.6.

Right now, there are some issues that we’re working on regarding SafeWeb. Tim Lopez posted an announcement a few days ago regarding this SafeWeb issue. Thanks!

Hi,

Can you give more details other than it's for "performence issues"?

What do you mean by other than it's for performance issues? Are you referring to why we are taking the time to mention this problem in the forums, or do you mean what the problem is causing besides performance issues?

If it is the latter of the two then the answer is both performance issues (the internet does seem to run slower than usual because NIS is continually trying to reach the safeweb server), along with the very small (yet nonetheless existant) security factor that chaz described.

Hi,

I just wanted to know why symantec have taken the Servers down for "performence issues" when, at least I though that everything to do with Norton Safe Web was Running okay.

Oh so that is what you meant. Sorry about the confusion. I guess I didn't know who the question was directed to.

I to am wondering why safeweb is suddenly having so many problems. Maybe it has something to due with the recently failed 16.7 patch. I am sure someone from Symantec will soon shed some more light on the situation.

We have been having intermittent network/hardware issues in our data center. IT engineers have been working round the clock with equipment vendors to get these resolved. These issues have resulted in the Norton Safe Web service being unreachable for some percentage of our users, typically in the first half of the day. We regret the inconvenience and hope to get it back on track soon.

It has been another three days and I was wondering if you could give us a progress report of how the repairing of safeweb is coming along.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, we are aware that this has gone on for several days now. We have tried a few things that did not solve the problem. We are continuing to work on it and are starting on a workaround solution if we cannot fix the primary problem.

Thanks for keeping us Posted!

Can you say what the "workaround" is?  And how long will this "workaround" be in place?

Norton Safe Web should be working as of late yesterday afternoon. Sorry again for the inconvenience caused by the outage.
