Norton Says everything is OK...Windows 8 says Norton and the Firewall are Turned Off

I had the same problem with NIS 2012 (Norton Says everything is OK...Windows 8 says Norton and the Firewall are Turned Off). Reinstalling using the Norton Remove & Reinstall tool did the trick for me.

I can assure you all that this is a windows 8 bug which i hope is taken care of soon i can say this because i am also having the same issue and i currrently have installed AVG 2013 Internet Security 2013 Business Edition and yet Windows Action Center Says That AVG and windows versions of: Antispyware, Antivirus, and Firewall are turned off it'is common that there are bugs withing new OS  I have windows 8 Pro with window media center on a 64-bit architecture So i can assure anyone worrying about this that there is no need to orry as your antivirus is Working as programmed to.

Thanks for sharing your experience Brian.

I had been wondering what users of other systems were experiencing.

I have the same problem. Windows 8 pro x64 and latest NIS.

I did not have this problem. I am on Windows 8 64 bit. Just done a fresh install of NIS 2013 I am new to it. Before installing it though. I disabled the built in Windows Defender and Windows Firewall. Then I installed NIS 2013. After install. Ran live update and once everything was updated. I followed up with a reboot. Everything is fine. Also. Make sure NET Framework 3.5 is enabled. Its not enabled by default in Windows 8. You can enable it by going to programs and features. Some programs need and use this.

The same notifications just popped up on my Windows 8 64-bit netbook (NIS 20.2.0.19).  Perhaps it was coincidence, but they appeared after a reboot after installing an updated wireless card driver and the latest Microsoft mouse software.

Rather than mess around in WMI I just turned off the Action Center notifications.  We'd appreciate knowing if Norton was working on a fix for this issue, or if they're leaving it to Microsoft.

Norton are definitely working on pinning down the cause for this (it's happening to other security programs too) and have their own lines of communication with Microsoft on problems like this.

I have had this happen to me lots of time so what I do to resolve it is open program files folder, find Norton folder, find NIS folder, than once opened find I believe the engine folder and open. Now press the c on keyboard and find ccsrvhst.exe and just open it. Nothing will come up but let it go for a minute than shutdown computer and restart it. That has fixed my problem every time. No warning messages or flags. Hey if you notice it works please let me know I'd be happy to know that I could help. Well good luck and enjoy. Did post picture of the file and look at the top for (Windows 8) folder paths.

I'm sure the techs are way ahead of us on this one, but FYI it occurs on my Windows 8 64-bit netbook (latest Norton NIS 2013) when I've updated drivers.  It also goes away after one more reboot, which is essentially what the previous post suggests.

I had the same Issue.  Here is how it appears to have been fixed with the help of a agent.

1.  Turned off smart definitions

2. ran live update

3. turned smart definitions back on

4. ran live update

5. rebooted

After the reboot windows 8 pro recognized Norton's Internet Security 2013 as controlling anti virus, spyware, and firewall.

I know some have reported a fix and few days later the problem was back, so I need to tell you this was just completed this morning and I had a frustrating time with a previous agent that did not seem to know this trick.  Smart Definitions off, resulted in one additional download when running liveupdate; after turning smart definitions back on, there were two additional files downloaded.

Note the previous evening I had reinstalled Norton's Internet Security, but that in itself did not solve the problem.

Concerning a possible fix I posted; I had updated my Norton's IS 2012 to 2013 before I did the OS upgrade. The second reinstallation was indeed after the OS upgrade.

I'm running Win8Pro 64bit. In the last week it seems NIS gets knocked out rather easily.

The first time everything was running fine with NIS installed. I installed the free Windows Media Center and the system went to restart. Afterwards the NIS icon in the tray failed to appear. I tried to start the NIS UI manually and nothing happened. Task Manager showed NIS services running. Running Media Center caused NIS to produce error 8504,101. Solution: remove Norton and reinstall. I couldn't believe Windows Media Center could knock out NIS.

The second time was last night, I installed the free Torchlight 2 demo. The game would not run so I uninstalled. Shortly afterwards Action Center reported Norton Spyware detector and Norton Firewall was off. Inside Action Center I clicked to turn them both on and nothing happened. Again Task Manager showed Norton services running.

If you have not, you may like to see this post by Norton Staff on where they are at on this incorrect announcement in Windows:

Thanks for this and Symantec told me a permenant fix is being worked on in a call last night.  True to what others have seen the flag came back, but the same process got rid of it.

That said, this would not be the first time Windows could not tell you had a antivirus and firewall.  The problem is going to chat and getting told first one thing and then something else.

In my case, when the flag appears, live update fails until I go through the procedure I was given.  Yes Internet Security showed green, but live update fails anyway on my specific machine.

I'm running Windows 7 and this is how i fixed this problem.

1. Click the Start button, and then click All Programs > Accessories > Run.

2. In the Run dialog box, type the following text:

regsvr32 /u WMIUTILS.DLL

3. Click OK.

4. Restart the computer.

5. Click the Start button, and then click All Programs > Accessories > Run.

6. In the Run dialog box, type the following text:

regsvr32 WMIUTILS.DLL

7. Click OK.

8. Restart the computer.

Additionally, if anyone is still experiencing this issue, please let me know. Thanks.

I am getting this problem.  I am using Windows 8 64-bit with Norton 360 Premier Edition 20.2.0.19.

As I was saying, I am still getting this problem.

I can't edit or delete my original post (although I can edit this one), I wanted to add that I think it started happening after I installed SQL Server 2008 Express R1 SP3.  Hope this helps you to find a solution.

Greg,

Just to clarify:  << I can't edit or delete my original post (although I can edit this one),  >>

None of us can delete messages (although in an emergency situation like posting something highly confidential you can contact a moderator and ask if they can do this) and we can only edit our own messages during a period, one hour the last I heard, after posting. This is to reduce the probability of a post changing its meaning after others have replied to it .....

Sorry I can't help with your problem but I have been told that Microsoft and Norton are working jointly on this .... after all it is Windows that says something is not there when it is and it's working fine!.
