Norton secure folder

The folder that the customer can keep their important file.

This folder will be encrypt and can access only when you put the correct password.

Thanks for this idea!
How important would this feature be for you?
Would you switch to a different vendor who had this?
Would you pay a bit extra to get this feature?
Would you prefer this, or full disk encryption?

Thanks! Dan

I personally would love this feature! - no, I would rather stick with Norton, even if they didn't have it, but it would make switching to someone else tempting if a different vendor did have it. Just this would be good - full disk encryption is not for me. As for paying more for it... hmmm.... no, as there are free programs available. However, it would be simpler, nicer and much much much more convienient if Norton could do it - in fact, I would feel that my data is safest if encrypted by a symantec product as opposed to anything else.

I also would love to see this feature.  I am using a product called folder lock right now.  It's ok.  But as Mattsegers says, I would feel more secure using a symantec product, knowing that it has been tested and my info is secure.

For me, now I am using the freeware. Microsoft private folder. It’ very simple and easy to use. I do not think secure whole disk is necessery for the target group of Norton (home user) customer. I think it should be as simple as we can. May be just right click and select “secure it” that folder will ask you to put the password to set it. Next time this folder ask you to put the password when you try to open the folder. I do not think the invisible folder or encrypt whole disk is necessery for novice user . Next thing we should copy this secure folder anywhere and can keep it in removable drive like usb key or external hard drive. May be we can open it from removable drive without Norton. Another choice Norton create the secure folder by default. If the customer need to keep something, they have to put it in this folder. I think the reason we should have this is not different from the function to keep the password in NIS.

If this is implemented, I reiterate everything specimen typed.

Ya I would love to see this feature

Yes, it is important. It's like private browsing but for the file system. Encryption would be a bonus, but it can be cumbersome. Truecrypt is a great free solution, but I prefer My Lockbox by FSPro (available in Free and Pro editions, but does not do encryption-- I guess you could use EFS).

I think this is a purpose better served by something like TrueCrypt. Having a big shiny folder labeled “Norton Private Folder” will only invite more attention to that folder, where a TrueCrypt container is much less obvious. I likely wouldn’t want it to even be installed. I don’t wish to keep others from it that may want it though. If it were to happen I’d rather it was like the Microsoft Private Folder in that it was an optional stand alone download. That would make everyone happy in that those that didn’t want it wouldn’t have to deal with it and those that do could install it. Full disk encryption is also not something I would want in a security suite. What happens if I uninstall the suite? Or if it expires?

Excellent Idea, and of course you now have PGP company owned by Symantec, so let's see some integration of encryption in Norton (especially 360). I would pay a premium for PGP whole disk encryption facility built into my Noprton 360

This is actually a great idea. Each user account on a given computer would have an encrypted folder with its own password. These passwords would be visible to the administrator accounts or to the user who set a Master Norton Password.

This would give Norton a big competitive edge.

Hate to be the one bursting the bubble, but you do realise the way you're suggesting this be implented doesn't need any additional software? Every NT based OS from XP onwards (earlier versions might have had it too, but I'm not sure), give you the option to encrypt on any file on an NTFS volume. It's in the options thing, and locks it precisely as you mention - only that user can access that file. XP even prompts you if you want to encrypt your personal folders when you first set your password.

The only hiccup with this is that its locked to that user on that installation. It doesn't play nicely with reinstallation of the OS or multi-booting - I know, I've lost data because something happened to my installation drive and although the rest of the data I wanted was stored seperately it was totally inaccessible. In fact I had to copy everything off, format the drive, and copy it all back in order to regain the space the inaccessible data was occupying.
