Why does my Norton Security Deluxe product occasionally load twice in my system tray and also is actually showing up twice when I run taskmanager as a process? I am using my laptop which only has 8 GB Ram, so every bit of memory is important for good performance. The first time I noticed it (months ago), my system was running really slow, so I know the double processes negatively effects my system performance.
I googled this issue first (before posting here) and see that you have been having this same issue since 2014!? What gives? Some of the responses from the experts here in other posts stated that it was just a duplicate icon in the system tray and didn't hurt anything. Not true. You can see that the process is running twice in the screenshot I took.
Yes, I can reboot and it goes away and is back to normal. But why is this same old problem still happening on Windows 10 in 2019?
File Attachment allowed an upload of files with .png extension. Replies do not have that option in the File Attachment area.
We have been trying to figure out why the forum software is set up like that. It is much easier to just attach an image than to go through the process that has been set up.
It is not just not using hibernate, but you have to turn the feature off using the instructions in the link I gave above. If it is still available on your system, Windows can activate the Fast Startup feature.
Thanks, Peter. I didn't understand before you clarified this. I thought just not using "hibernate" when choosing the Control Panel settings was what you meant at first.
Also, thanks for showing me how to add the screen shots to a reply in this forum. When I asked my question, I just used the "File Attachment" feature at the bottom of the post to add my screen shot because at that time, File Attachment allowed an upload of files with .png extension. Replies do not have that option in the File Attachment area. So, I am adding the screen shot of the task manager processes here, to this reply, when only one NS icon is in the system tray. I will repeat: the difference is the icon in task manager. In my post, with 2 NS icons in the system tray, I had 2 NS black icons showing in task manager. Here, with only one NS icon in the system tray, the first NS icon is yellow/green and only the second NS icon is black. I have no idea if that means anything or not. Just posting it as an FYI.
Thanks, Peter. Right now I am not using the hibernate feature on this machine. Maybe that is why I haven't had to turn off fast startup (again) for some time. I will check my other systems to make sure they are also not using hibernate. Thanks!

I just wanted to let you know when I ran the Norton tool in Help (yesterday) it didn't find any problems with my Norton installation. But that was after I had rebooted and only had one icon in the system tray. So, if I get duplicate icons for NS in the future, I will definitely re-execute that tool and see if it detects anything different. Thank you!

Thank you, F 4 E. Today, everything is normal and there is only 1 Norton Security icon in the taskbar. However, the screen shot I took today does show a different icon for the first Norton Process in task manager. This time, I did expand the processes. But the first Norton process listed (today with the "different" icon) does not expand now or before. I have no idea if the change in the icons in task manager means anything. When I had duplicate icons in the taskbar/system tray, the icon in task manager was black. Now the icon that cannot be expanded is mainly yellow with the green check mark (it looks like the normal Norton Security icon in the taskbar).
Wow. I cannot load another screen shot to show you this because right now this thread is only letting me upload attachments with a txt, pdf, or zip file type! What is up with that!? You are only allowed one .png file attachment per thread? Why? That is not helpful at all. I don't own a pdf editor and don't plan on getting one just to post a picture in this thread.
If you want to stop new versions of Windows from turning on Fast Startup again, you can do this as long as you do not use the Hibernate feature. If this is the case for you, you can disable the hibernate feature by following these instructions from Microsoft. I have done this and the new Windows versions have not been able to turn on Fast Startup again.
Marilyn, what you are showing in Task Manager is normal.
Norton has always shown two processes at least, and if you check the down arrow it should show that one is the UI and the other will be the AV process.
The WSC Service is explained thus.
Norton Security WSC service is added to support Windows 10 RS5 operating system.
Thanks muchly for the info. Yes, I noticed some of the updates do that. I have had to uncheck that box several times, so now I check that it is still turned off after every update. Also, I have had new versions of Win 10 turn off System Restore, too. That really bothers me! I can understand how a new Win 10 version can delete the old version's restore points, but they have no business turning off system restore if it was turned on. Sometimes they mess with things they have no business messing with.
Just an FYI. The major Win 10 updates have been known to re enable the Fast Startup feature. So if you have not already checked, it is worth at least checking the status of the feature.
You're welcome, sounds like you are on top of the fast startup scenario. Please let us know how the automated tool run works out. We can assist further if needed. I too have seen this happen once or twice on my machines. Fast startup is also disabled on them all. Some updates just have a hard time getting fully installed thus the reboot corrects it whether prompted to do so or not.
Thank you for your response, SoulAsylum! I have had "fast startup" disabled for years--ever since MS first created it. A "shut down" should enable a cold boot from my perspective. I will definitely run the automated Norton Help tool and then I will just have to wait to see if it happens again. The problem is intermittent, but still annoying. Thanks, again!
Hello Marilyn27. Windows 10 has a known issue where software doesn't fully complete updates and installs with "fast startup" enabled. You can disable that setting by following this guide, reboot and see if the issue duplicates itself.
Another thing you can try is opening your Norton UI by clicking your Norton icon in the system tray. Go to the top right and click "Help". In the next dialog that appears look to the right and click on "Get Support". An automated tool will run to check your Norton install for issues and correct any it finds. I would perform both these and see if the issue gets resolved.
