Norton Security...lost the icon on toolbar and now norton not working

I am not a techie nor do i understand too many computer issues.  Norton Security prompted me to update my program and I did a few days ago and now I don't have it on my toolbar and when I click on the desktop, it says I have an internal program error.  I cannot open my antivirus program at all. What happened?  How do I fix it.  My renewal comes up in April.  If I download the renewal but the 2011 norton security is not on my computer, can I get the renewal anyway?

I have norton security 2011.  After i got your response, I went back to previously saved email of when I renewed last year to check on what program I had.  In the email, there was a link:  "Continue to receive FREE protection updates and new versions with your product subscription. Get the latest version now."  I clicked on it and downloaded the new updates (I guess norton security 2012?).  I had to manually install since my current version was not detected on my computer.  I downloaded it and it uninstalled then reinstalled and it seems now everything is okay.  Do you think I did it correctly?

 

Anyway, mahalo for your advice and for asking what version I had.  That way it prompted me to retrieve an old email with the update link.  Hopefully, things continue to run smoothly.

Norton Antivirus2012 ver. 19.6.2.10 has disappeared from my Windows XP Toolbar twice in a week.  I can not get to Norton from the Start/Programs list.  After the first disappearing act, I ended up reloading from my Norton Account.  Then this morning Norton is gone again.  Please recommend how to fix this!  Thanks.
