Norton Security Service in Accessibility

Hello,

I run NMS on a Samsung 10.4 2014 Tablet, which runs the Android OS. When I tap the NMS icon on the home page, the app shows "You are Protected". However, below that, a link reads "Turn on Norton Security Service". When I tap that link, I find I am on the accessibility page under the "Device Settings" heading, where it states that Norton Security Service is "off". What does that feature perform? I do know that if I "turn on" Norton Security Service", it activates the (to me) objectionable text-to-speech feature on the tablet, so I have left this turned off. Again I ask, what function does that feature offer or perform (besides turn on the TTS feature)?

Thank you ahead of time.

It never occurred to me that to turn off text-to-speech I had to turn off Google Voice Typing . . .

Again thanks to all!

Thanks for letting us know that Samsung was able to sort things out for you.

Hello All,

This afternoon, I went on line to Samsung's web site and one of their tech people accessed the tablet remotely. He turned off Controls>Keyboard & Input Methods>Google Voice Typing and now with Norton Security Services turned on, text-to-speech is not on.

Thank you again for your help!

Without the Norton Security Service enabled, the App Advisor for Google Play will not function.  You will still get App Advisor (provided your license qualifies you for the feature) through the main "App Security" screen for apps that are already installed, but you won't get the pre-install scan from Google Play.

You will also not have web protection for certain browsers like Opera or Firefox.

Thank you to all . . .

It is a Samsung 10.4 2014 tablet and it is running Android Kit Kat v. 4.4.2, which I believe is the newest OS version.

With Norton Mobile Security telling me I am "protected" but Norton Security Service turned off, what am I compromising?

Thanks again to all and best regards.

Unfortunately there are some bugs in Samsung's Android implementation on certain devices and OS versions which link all Accessibility services to Talkback, and it is not something we have been able to work around.  Your options would be to either keep the Norton service off, enable talkback, or perhaps there is an OS update available which will solve it (Samsung has solved it on many devices with system updates).

Which specific tablet do you have?

I see what you are saying now. I notice that my TTS is enabled, but I have never had the feature start up. Have you had the speech function start up in the past? Or now that Norton is installed?

peterweb,

Under Settings>Accessibility>Text To Speech Options, next to "Preferred TTS engine", there is a bullet point activating "Samsung text-to-speech engine", but no way to deselect it. If I tap the gear next to "Samsung TTS engine", I can choose a language, voice settings, and then "install voice data"

Below that, under the "General" heading, are listed: "Speech Rate", and if I tap that, I can select settings between "Very slow" to "Fastest". I then have "Listen to an example", and then "Default language status, which is greyed out, but shows "English (United States) is fully supported" (also greyed out).

That's it . . .

Thanks again!

To find the TTS feature in Settings - Accessibility, scroll down to where you see Talk to Speech in the list of services. Tap on that and you should see options for that feature. See if you can turn it off from the options page.

Peterweb,

Thanks again for your insight.

I have not been able to determine where I can turn off TTS once I have activated Norton Security Services.

The tablet is running Android Kit Kat 4.4.2, which I believe is the most recent version.

Best Regards.

It does not turn on TTS feature on my HTC phone. Are you able to turn TTS off after starting the Norton Service?

What is the version of Android on your tablet?

>>The Norton Service in the Accessibility section of Android settings is required for the Web Protection and the Google App Advisor features. You will see a message explaining this when you go to turn on the service.

It does not turn on the Talkback feature.<<

Thank you for your reply.

Perhaps we are no talking about the same 'feature'.

When I "turn on" Norton Security Services on the accessibilities page, it turns on TTS.

Best Regards.
