I have solved the problem. There was a problem with the external drive, which has now been solved. I can now make the backup. Thanks for your help.

Do have the external drive connected prior to opening the backup settings?
I only see the C: and D: drive, but I want the backup on my F: drive (= external disc)

I am sorry to hear of the problem you are having. Telling us a bit about the setup may help to diagnose the problem.
- In the Manage Backup Sets window, what is the destination set to ('Where Tab')?
- Is you backup set to automatic or manual schedule?
- Is your external drive always plugged in?
- Is there sufficient free space on the external drive?
- "The backup to the internal drive worked" is that your backup destination or was that just a test?
If you could include a few screenshots of the tabs in Manage Backup Sets that might be helpful.
