Norton Still kills audio/video of system

Ever since this update from several months back was installed, my audio and ability to play videos (online) stops working randomly and takes a system reboot to work again. If I uninstall norton and install a different antivirus, works fine, no problems. I had been using norton for several years, maybe 10, no problems, it’s all this latest set of updates. I recall there is a way to move back to the old version, but really, they need to address this otherwise i’ll have no choice but to find another antivirus to use.

Did you by chance happen to run Driver Updater when this happened? What is your OS and what is its build and version? TIA.

SA

no. it only occurs when this update (wasn’t it V24 where it all started) is installed, wasn’t doing it on the old versions of norton If I uninstall it, install a different antivirus, no problems, uninstall that, reinstall norton, problem is back.

Version 24.xx is indeed where the current changes began being seen. The current release is version 25.xx. What OS are you running? Window 10 / 11 version? Build?

My suggestion is update your video drivers here:

Your Fraunhofer codecs are from 2019 but should be good if you have not gotten any notifications from Windows. Try updates on Windows Updates and look for released drivers. These may also be conflicting one with another:

Everything works fine if these latest versions of Norton are not installed. The old version, no problem, uninstalling the current versions, installing McAfee, no problem. Uninstall McAfee, reinstall these versions, problem comes back.

More details!! Videos play fine if I click the mute button, as soon as I unmute, it goes back to not playing video and no sound.

My suggestion is revert to version 22.24.8.36 and stay on that version. Norton has a mess on their hands that isn’t going to get straightened out any time soon, if ever. They’re pushing these last two versions to customers for us to work out their issues. Here is how to revert and stay on that version while keeping your antivirus definitions current:

You need to completely remove the current 24.xx /25.xx version with the tool linked below. Then, download the installer for version 22.24.8.36 and immediately disable automatic updates. DO NOT allow it to run even once, and don’t run it manually. DO NOT run Smart Scan.
