I uninstalled NSW2008 Basic 3 months ago (better products available for free online). However, it still tries to update itself every hour or so and this is really annoying. Every once in a while I get a LiveUpdate Summary come up saying that "The install script for this update was unable to launch a file it needed. LiveUpdate aborted the update install. (Error code 1812) Patch criticality: Recommended"
There's a link to Tech Support, but the fact of the matter is that the update should not be running at all because the product has been uninstalled! How do I stop this? I've tried everything short of a full removal of all Norton products, but I guess that might have to be next, unless anyone has any better ideas?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I've tried emailing but the email options are very limited so I've never had a response. There is Tech Support chat, but only if I install another Norton product and that's the last thing in the world I want to do.
Do you have any other Norton products installed? Do you have Norton AntiVirus alongside NSW?
If not there are two things you can do -- I think I'd do both.
1 -- look in Windows Remove Programs for an entry for Symantec Update -- that's not the exact title since I no longer have it but if you go into Windows Control Panel you will see an entry for it there -- and uninstall that program as well.
In Norton versions prior to 2009 Updating was done by an independent module installed in Control Panel that fed all Norton applications. WIth 2009 onwards (NIS, NAV and N360 V3) the updater is part of the application and specific to it; it does not look for updates except for its own environment.
2 -- there is a Norton Removal Tool that you can download and run which was designed to clean up incomplete uninstalls and it takes out some additional material that the application's own uninstall module used by Windows Remove Programs may skip.
Don't use the Norton Removal Tool if you have other Norton applications installed -- GHOST Save & Restore for example -- or if you have Norton AV installed.
