Norton Systemworks 12 Basic will not install; Says Product Key is wrong

I recently purchased a 3 user upgrade for several Norton products.  The upgraded products are as follows:

  • Norton Internet Security 2009
  • Norton Ghost 14
  • Norton Systemworks Basic 12

I have had installation problems with Norton Systemworks on one computer.  The program installed without error on 2 of the computers but the installation crashed on the third computer.  When I attempted to reinstall the program, the initial license/product key screen came up normally but I got an error box saying that the Product Key I entered was wrong.  Both my wife and I tried reentering the key several times without luck.  I then tried placing the Systemworks CD in another computer and it accepted the key without a problem.

I looked on the Norton Web site and followed its advice to uninstall all Norton programs and then downloaded and ran the Norton Product Removal Tool to clean up any remaining items.

I then put the Systemworks CD back in the PC and tried again.  I got the same error message when I entered the key in the license screen.  There must be some item left on the disk or the registry that is preventing the product key from being accepted.

Could you provide information on how to get this PC to accept the install Key?

Thanks,

Hi Ken,

After running the removal tool, try the following steps(Windows XP):

1. Exit all programs.
2. Click Start > Run.
3. In the Run dialog box, type the following text:
    regedit
4. Click OK.
5. In the left pane, select the following registry key:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec
6. Select Symantec and Press Delete.
7. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
8. Exit the Registry Editor.

Then try to install Norton SystemWorks 12.0 basic edition. If that is not working, download Norton SystemWorks 12.0 basic edition from this LINK and install it. Let us know the results.
