Every time I run the One Button Checkup in Norton SystemWorks Basic 12.0 (v. 12.0.1, build 1), it disables Java in my Internet Explorer (IE) web browser. As far as I can tell, Java is not affected if I run the One Button Checkup without Norton Cleanup Scan (i.e., with the Windows Registry Scan and all other scanner enabled except for Norton Cleanup Scan). I configured Norton Cleanup Scan to run without cleaning up Temporary Files and it still disabled Java, so I suspect that cleaning the Internet Clutter (e.g., removing "unwanted" Active-X controls, cookies, etc.) is what is causing the problem.
When I say that Java is disabled in Internet Explorer, I mean that:
- the Java JVM operability test at http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml fails
- Java cannot be enabled through the IE web browser
- the Java version does not appear on the Advanced tab of IE (Tools | Internet Options | Advanced | checkbox for the current version of Java is missing)
- scripting of Java applets cannot be enabled in IE (Tools | Internet Options | Security | Custom Level | Scripting | section for scripting Java applets is missing)
This disabling of Java by Norton Cleanup Scan has happened for both IE7 and IE8 and for various versions of the Java JVM (6.7, 6.10, 6.11). The only way to repair the problem seems to be to uninstall Java (Start | Control Panel | Programs and Features) and then do a complete re-install.
My Norton SystemWorks Basic is installed on a HP dv6835ca Pavilion notebook PC running under Microsoft Windows Vista 6.0.6001 SP1.
