Norton thinks my computer is idle and starts scanning during silent mode

Hello, when I'm watching movies or livestreams on full screen, norton starts idle scanning after 10 minutes. It enters silent mode as usual but after 10 minutes, which is the default idle timeout, it thinks that the computer is idle and starts scanning. I came up with this idea by hearing heavy hard drive sounds during movie. Then, I exit full screen and immediately open the task manager and saw norton is on top of the disk usage. After doing this, norton's disk usage went back to normal in a couple of seconds since it thought my computer is not idle anymore. Even if it's in silent mode, it somehow starts idle scanning after 10 minutes of full screen media play, so that makes hard drive go heavy load during movies and makes the situation annoying.

Hi,

It doesn't mean that if you are watching something in fullscreen that Norton detects it.

One example is IE.

Go to the main NIS GUI and manually add the .exe of the program you want to use and add it to the list of the programs that Norton should consider as in Silent Mode ON status.

Let us know if it works.

Thanks.

Regards,

As I said in my post, norton already enters silent mode during these actions. But somehow starts scanning after 10 minute idle timeout. After exiting full screen, silent mode turns off and all disk usage activity from norton stops.

Anyway, I added my media player to quiet mode detection - user specified programs list. But as you know, can't add my web browser to the list, and it will probably going to do idle scans during livestreams.

Hi,

Open your C:\Program Files and/or C:\Program files x86 and add the iexplore.exe or the 2 iexplore.exe if you use IE 10 processes to the exclusion list too.

It should work.

Please let me know the results.

Hi,

As Apostolos mentioned you can add IE to the Quiet mode list. You can also increase the idle time out to 30 mins by going to Settings->General->Norton Tasks->Idle Time out.

Thanks.

What the 'experts' have neglected to tell you is that Norton determines when the system is 'idle' based on the LACK of keyboard or mouse activity.

Just because you're watching a movie doesn't mean Norton considers the system to be not idle.

Manually adding the appropriate program to the silent mode list should resolve your problem.

I don't know how to explain this situation in another way. All people in this thread have misread my message apparently. Norton DOES ENTER SILENT MODE AS IT SHOULD when I go full screen. There isn't any problem here. But despite being in silent mode, it starts scanning after 10 minutes like it's never been into silent mode. This wasn't happening on older versions, so please stop suggesting me adding programs to silent mode settings. That's not even my problem. It already detects full screen applications and enters silent mode, but does not act like it's in silent mode.

Bottom line is, silent mode is not working as it should. It just acts like only a logo difference on taskbar, norton is doing background tasks whenever there's been 10 minute timeout, including during silent mode.

Edit: Just for the records, I actually moved away from norton and switched to another software. Replying just for the sake of this thread. Really fed up with norton's problems on my both machines over this whole year.

Hi zaede,

Please take a closer look in my previous post:

"It doesn't mean that if you are watching something in fullscreen that Norton detects it."

As you can see now, I hope that you can, the "expert" already mentionned this.

Hope this helps your understanding.
