Norton Toolbar disappears after applying 17.1.0.14 patch

Yet ANOTHER frustrated NIS user.

Like the rest of you, my Firefox add-ons went away after the 17.1.0.14 update.

I run Win XP SP3, and Firefox 3.5.4.

timeless314,

You have a reason to be frustrated. But atleast I'm happy that we community members could report this to Norton and earn a fix. Anyways, let us patiently await further confirmation from Tim.

KeitaroUrashima Hi,

Sorry, my mistake, I'm using IE version 8, which probably explains why everything is working as it should.

drshlomo.

Unfortunately this patch was automatically downloaded when I booted up today.  Like everyone else, I lost the Norton Toolbar in Firefox.  These problems with NIS and Firefox are getting really tiresome. :smileymad:

I had the same problem but first didn't find the reason why all my addons where gone after restarting my firefox. I installed my new Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit yesterday and many programs. I didn't know what caused the problem because i also experienced a startup problem with PowerDVD. After installation it didn't want to start and hanged so i had to shut it down through Taskmanager. An hour ago i decided to reinstall my whole system due to many different problems when i stumbled over a solution. I deleted all extensions.* files in the profiles directory of my FF and all addons worked.

After some restarts also PowerDVD works now. I have no explanation.

Is the update already taken from the servers or is there still the "danger" that liveupdate will download it? I have other computers and Notebooks in my household, all equipped with Norton 2010 and Firefox.

I hope there will soon be an update without these problems.

So long, Ayiana

Let’s hope that the fix as Tim and his team have said is on a high priority basis is released in the coming few days with proper testing before unleashing it to the masses. It has happened to me before while using NIS 2009 on Windows XP a few months ago when the famous 16.7 update or whatever the version was released and it had caused numerous issues with Firefox 3.5. My primary browser is always FF so I am rendered useless and have to rely on IE 8 for which I have no long lost love personally. Anyway, as mentioned by a few here its better to have this community where we can report our issues and then the problem can be resolved as soon as possible.

Having to use IE to post this because I have lost all add-ons in Firefox after the update. Running Firefox 3.0.14, (so problem is not limited to 3.5 only) Vista 32 bit Home Premium  on a Compaq Presario SR5310F. The only way I could logon was to use IE to get at my logon password! Sure hope this bug gets fixed real soon!

Forgive me for being so negative here, but don’t you guys test this stuff?  I would guess a significant portion of your security conscious customers use Firefox.  Yet it seems like on a regular basis your updates either break functionality, or more often the case, are not kept up to date with the public release schedule for new Firefox versions.  I really think you guys should consider the impact this causes to your customer.

Moved to existing thread for better exposure.

@aboehlen: Here is an excerpt about patches are released:

--------------------

2. When will I receive the patch? (http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&thread.id=83394)

As a standard practice, we will be deploying the patch in a phased manner. On Tuesday, 27th of October, we will be releasing the patch to some randomly selected customers. We will then monitor our telemetry, as well as this forum, for any problem reports or issues.

Once we have confirmed the effectiveness of the patch we will make it available to all customers. We will post an update on the Norton Community Forums when we make the patch available to all customers.

--------------------

That means that we, the users, seem to test the patches.

But before anyone gets mad at me, I've always been very happy with NIS, I use it since 1998 and I've never had any other Security Suite besides NIS, I also made it through the bad times of NIS in which it was quite a heavy load on my system but since version 2009 I forgot those bad times since my system was running faster than ever before and everything was perfect for me.

I would just be happy if these practices as mentioned above would be changed so that we do not have to experience problems like this again. I think it shouldn't be so time consuming to test bigger patches before a release to the customers on let's say a virtual machine with the by NIS supported browsers to see if the patch works as planned or not.

Just to say it again, I've always been very happy with NIS that's just a request for the future and upcoming patches. I know that Symantec works on their products, best example are the newer versions of NIS (since 2009) which are faster than any versions before.

Now I hope no one is picking on me for writing this but I'm just a bit disappointed.

@KeitaroUrashima: That's interesting. I thought the Beta-testing would be over. ;)

Nice, yesterday I got my new Windows 7 Home Premium and installed it on a formatted partition. I wanted a clean and "perfect" installation and what I get is the privilege to serve as "beta tester".

I know that there have to be beta testers but i want to know when I am one. ;)

And that's quite reasonable.

There are an entire team of beta-testers lurking these boards.  I should know, having been one of them.  Most of us would be glad to volunteer one of our machines to test these "fixes" before they are released.  I have no idea why Symantec feels it can dump a product on a general public who are neither willing nor prepared (even worse) to accept the risk of testing what could be a damaging product; and yet they ignore those of us who are standing by and ready to do just that.

Oh please…what a bunch of crybabies. Tell me, is everything you do always perfect every time? Well guess what…Symantec developers are human beings just like you.

Hi, Timeless (and anyone else willing to help), would you do us a favor.

On my own computer I had another bug.  I want to find out if it's affecting everyone because if so it also needs to be fixed before the patch is re-released.

Would you open Firefox and do the following:

1.  Press F11 to go into the Full Screen Mode.

2.  Wait about 15 seconds.

3.  Load some page or another.

4.  Press F11 to go back to Normal Screen Mode.

Repeat this a couple of times.  Check to see if when you return to the Normal Screen Mode, the blue bar reappears at the top of the page and if it is functioning (the minimize/mazimize/reshape buttons all work) and if the primary menu bar (with File, Edit, View, etc.) is always restored.

Thanks a lot,

Not like me.  I have an extra foot growing out of my left nostril.

Uh, Bulldoggy ...

When a patch is released untested on one of the only two browsers it interacts with, and when that patch is fundamentally and OBVIOUSLY flawed (that is, it simply doesn't load in the browser), that can be considered a blatant error.

And if that patch actually destroys Outlook folder information (as one poster claims -- I can't verify it, since I don't use Norton Antispam unless I am testing), and Outlook is the ONLY such program its Antispam directly integrates with, that too is a blatant and unnecessary error.

Yes, we all make mistakes (and I hope we are all human); but that is one of the reasons we check our work before sharing it with people who are going to depend upon it.

mijcar

I so appreciate your post. Alas I can only give one kudos!

It would be interesting to know if anyone who has been "upgraded" and was running Firefox still has functioning addons. If no one does then obviously this patch received no testing with Firefox whatsoever.

Just my opinion!

So mijcar, you were there in the room with the Symantec developers, and you heard them say "Should we bother testing this patch? Nah - let's just release it anyway."

Boo-hoo-hoo.

Ayiana wrote:

In the meantime I have discovered another bug with the update. I could no longer get my Outlook starting. It always crashed. After several reboots and restarts I got it working again. Outlook says that this is due the Antispam Toolbar from Norton and recommends to deactivate it and tries to restore the program. Now all my folders are gone including the emails. Only a few ones remain in the Inbox. (Good that I have done a backup a few days ago!)

Nice. I have been very satisfied with Norton since Version 2009 but at the moment I am disappointed.

Anybody else experiencing such things?

Kind regards, Ayiana

Ayiana, I don't doubt you at all; but, please, as Ayiana asked, can anyone else out there confirm that they have had the same problem or not?

Also, Ayiana, can you tell us if you are referring to Outlook Express or MS Office Outlook?  And which version?
