Norton Toolbar disappears after applying 17.1.0.14 patch

I seem to be one of the Norton Internet Security 2010 users who were unlucky enough to have received the 17.1.0.14 patch on 10/27

I restarted the  PC (HP Pavilian XP Pro SP3)  per instructions. What a mess. Destroyed all of the add-ons and plug-ins for FireFox 3.5.3.

Puzzled, I did a system restore to the previous days system check point. Worked perfectly. FireFox was restored to its previous condition.

However, Norton Internet Security 2010 was completely removed from my system. I know I searched. Gone! I thought, How Strange.

I did have the fortune to have the installation files saved. I did a reinstall of Norton Internet Security 2010. All is OK now.

My only comment is, Please don't do that again.

admin bump could you verify please

:smileyhappy:

sutonius101 Hi,

I was happy to read that my suggestion to restore to an earlier restore point helped you.

Enjoy.

I got a pop up today telling me to download Firefox 3.5.4 for security reasons.  I did so with no problems.  However I just looked at my browser and discovered that the Norton Toolbar is gone as is my Card and Log in icon.  My internet explorer is fine, it is just Firefox that it is missing in.  I have Windows XP.  Hopefully Symantec will get a fix so we can get the toolbar back.

When you installed FF 3.5.4 do you know if you had already received the 17.1.0.14 live update that all this thread is about? Could you check Help / About and say what the version ID is -- in the format nn.nn.nn.nnn

Please verify what? You've posted a few times so please fill in the details especially in a thread as long as this one!

Ayiana, I don't doubt you at all; but, please, as Ayiana asked, can anyone else out there confirm that they have had the same problem or not?

Also, Ayiana, can you tell us if you are referring to Outlook Express or MS Office Outlook?  And which version?

For the benefit of others, this has been confirmed and a remedy posted:

They have posted that it has been removed and will tell us when it is being reposted.

See  Re: Norton AntiVirus/Norton Internet Security 2010.1 Patch

Thank huwyngr! You beat me to it by 2 minutes! I removed my almost identical response. :smileyhappy:

Tim, the administrator for the Board, wrote, in a separate thread but relating to these issues:-

We're investigating this issue. It doesn't look like this issue is 100% reproducible for all users. We're going to try and reproduce this issue here. If we're unable to reproduce this issue, we'll contact some of you to gather information on this issue.

this suggests that Norton are dealing with a very difficult problem and we should all understand this and help by highlighting any problems which arise and any solutions which help us recover.

And there was I thinking, when I got a message deleted signal from my subscription email link, that you'd put your foot in it again! <gdr>

BTW how about making that announcement sticky so that it is up with the original announcement? Othewise people who have seen the first announcement won't know to follow the link to the thread.

Or maybe even unsticking the first and just making the second dis-announcement sticky?

Either way people would see the update up front. Leaving both up top is probably best.

Hi drshlomo,

That post in that thread regarding the Microsoft Outlook issue was in regards to that specific issue. Any other issues should be discussed in their own thread.

Thanks!

All,

The team has identified the issue and have developed a fix. They are going to give the fix some thorough testing to ensure no other problems arise from the changes that were made.

We expect to have the official testing for the fix complete and embedded in to the patch by early next week.

As you may already know from previous posts on this thread from other users, you can gain access to your other Add-Ons by simply disabling the Norton Toolbar Add-On and then restarting Firefox. To do this, launch Firefox, click on the Tools menu, select Add-ons, click on Norton Toolbar 4.0 and select Disable. Be sure to restart Firefox after disabling the Norton Toolbar Add-On.

If you need an immediate solution, Export your Identity Safe settings by clicking on Settings from the Main User Interface, selecting Web Settings, and clicking Configure next to Backup Identity Safe Settings. Then uninstall 17.1 and select the I plan to reinstall a Norton product in the future option to save your settings. After uninstalling 17.1, you can reinstall Norton Internet Security 17.0 from http://www.norton.com/nis10 and regain access to your Norton Toolbar features and settings. If you do not see your old Identity Safe information, you can restore it from the Web Settings section using the Restore Identity Safe Data option. The 17.1 patch will not be re-downloaded through LiveUpdate, until the issues have been corrected and applied to the patch, as the old patch has been removed from the LiveUpdate server.

A third option would be to use Internet Explorer as your browser to gain access to your Identity Safe logins and passwords, until the updated patch gets deployed.

I will continue to provide you with any further information as it becomes available. As of right now, this is the latest information.

Again, I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused. We're continuing to work around the close to ensure that these issues are corrected.

Thanks, Tim.

And thanks to the developers for working hard to get a fix out. Other software organizations would just stonewall their customers.

Sorry Tim, you're quite right.

drshlomo.

I got the Norton update 16.1.0.14 patch prior to the firefox update.  I didn’t notice the toolbar missing til later when I went to log into the Norton cards and log ins and discovered it wasn’t there.

Tim, by the time the next patch is available, the team will have to have made a decision regarding those of us who already are (mis)patched.  Are they planning on a) the next patch both updating 17.0 AND fixing those of us with a faulty 17.1 or b) will we then be expected to first uninstall 17.1, return to 17.0, then get the patch?

My suspicion is that Symantec will follow option b).   If the team expects this to be the case, then we users with 17.1 should handle the uninstallation/reinstallation at our leisure BEFORE the new patch, rather than trying to hasten through it when it is released.

That means we should be given a heads-up as soon as possible so we can prepare for the patch.

To: huwymgr - I got the norton patch  17.1.0.14 prior to the firefox update 3.5.4.  I just didn’t notice the toolbar missing til I went to log into the cards and log ins.

Hi mijcar,

Sorry to say that your suspicions are incorrect. It will be option "a". If you can recall, this was also the way that the 16.7 patch was handled.

I'll let you know if this changes.

Sorry?!  Hah!  They sounds great.  Hope it works out.
