Norton Tray Icon sometimes gret

NIS2011 v17
Vista Home Premium 32 bit

I have cable internet connection. so as soon as I turn on my computer, the internet connection follows pretty quickly
I noticed recently that upon start up, thhe Orton Icon in the system tray will sometimes be “grey” for a few seconds. Sometimes even after thhe connection to the internet is made (that symbol with the little world/globe). No I have NIS set to aggressive on boot mode.
So shouldn’t the Norton tray icon have a green check right away? Especially before the connection to the internet?

Hi Calls:

Yes, there should be a green check mark upon boot, assuming you didn't turn off NIS before that or if there was an error.

Is your Security History clear? How many seconds is the icon "greyed out" for? Is your computer just a bit slow?

sorry a typo in the subject line and should read greyed out

it is only a few seconds, but sometimes stays grey until after the vista side bar loads up.
thinking it should green check mark before iconnecting to internet and before sidebar loads

oh and security history shows no problems

Hi Calls:

Oh, OK. I see what you mean.

When was the last time you had run a complete defragmentation on your computer?

I get this feeling that it is a performance issue.

Hi Calls,

As long as the pause until the icon turns green is temporary, there is no issue.  The icon reports the state of Norton's health.  Green is good, red is bad and grey just means that Norton's state has not yet been reported.  Norton starts running when the system is started (with slight differences in the various components depending on the Early Load setting).  If the icon is visible, Norton is running.  The status reported by the icon can be delayed while the status is checked, and so does not always show green immediately upon startup.  When I used NIS2011, the icon almost always showed grey before turning green.  I have noticed that the behavior of the icon can change depending on the product version and patch history.  The icon in NIS 2012 with Boot Time Protection set to aggressive usually shows green for me when it first appears - which of course, is some time after Norton has already been loaded and running for awhile.

Calls,

I rarely see this on  my normal WIN 7 32 bit System but I do sometimes on a more rarely used XP or WIN 7 64 bit system where there can be appreciable delays (I mean a minute or more) on the Norton Icon as well as the Internet Connection icon even appearing in the systray.

During this time the activity lights on my cable modem are off for the pair showing up and download so I presume that something is delaying the connection from being made -- we know that Norton has to check with Mom before being available to the user.

I've not spent enough time on the altenate systems to see if I can debug it -- the XP has NIS 2012 and the WIN 7 64 has N 360 V6 Beta but I've no idea if the delay is with them or elsewhere. Next time I'm in there I'll try some investigating.

Hi Calls:

Question for you.

Now that 19.5 is out why don't you upgrade to NIS 2012?

Perhaps you might have a better user experience.

Best,
