Norton Update Issues

I use Norton AntiVirus '09 and I have been having problems updating the definitions.  Every so often, when I update, the standard virus definitions fail to update and install, but the other definitions, including the pulse update, still work as normal and the program says that it is secure.

When I use the automated tech support, it says that there is an issue with the Norton servers and that I sould wait 24 hours, then try to update again.

I use the Intelligent Updater tool, and then the program updates normally for a while, then it happens again, so I do it again.

Has anyone else had this issue?  The program still runs fine and does it's job, and I just worried is this is a symptom of a much worse problem?

Hello BigComp,

I generally just let the pulse updates and automatic live update take care of my definitions.

There have been a few times when a manual Live Update did not complete. I would just wait for a bit and invariably, the manual live update would complete successfully.

Occasionally there may be issues with the Norton servers, and that may be just the time you are trying to run a manual live update.

As long as your pulse updates and automatic live updates are working and Norton indicates secure I don't think you have a problem.

Hi BigComp,

Refer to this Symantec Support Article, follow the instructions to find out exact error message of LiveUpdate. Please post the error message. This will help to identify the failure in liveupdate session.

I think that's what he allready did.

Just give Symantec a moment and see what happens after a couple of days.

Hi Stu,

The error code that comes with the failure may differ according to the failed update and it's cause for failure. For example error message will be "Norton LiveUpdate was unable to install an update", but the error code may be (8920,200) for some updates, and (8920,201) for some others. That's why I asked for the exact and complete error message. I don't think that it is available in the thread.

I see what you mean. But the steps in that article he allready did. that’s what I mean. But your suggestion is ok

I think what BigComp is experiencing is similar to other posts about Live Update such as this recent one.  The error message that BigComp receives is "an issue with the Norton servers". The vast majority of these are cured by just waiting for a bit.

Since BigComp mentions that this only occurs "Every so often"  and does not happen continuously, I don't believe there is any problem with the product.

IMHO, most of the time it is best to let Norton take care of the updates and occasionally check the time of the last Definition Updates - this procedure causes much less concern.

Sorry, but I didn’t get the errror code.  I did the Intelligent Updater, and it works fine again.  I think that if it happens again, I’ll just wait.  Thanks for all your help.

Yup, it happened to me too 1hr before.

This problem has 2 step solution, and always worked fr me.

1. Restart and try updating again.

2. If step 1 fails then manually download latest df, install them, restart and then live update.

Hope, this will work for others too.
