I am using NIS (Norton Internet Security) o a laptop running XP SP3
Thanks
What version of NIS? Do you have Windows Defender installed?
Using NIS 2010 and I don't have Windows Defender installed. I think I used it at one time but not currently.
Try the following:
Disable "Norton Product Tamper Protection" within NIS and try a deep scan again
Re-enable Norton Protect Tamper Protection whether it works or not so you retain protection
If that fails, check the permissions on the key you listed. Make sure that your user has read and full control (as well as System).
I tried the first two steps with no luck; get same error message.
Can you clarify the 3rd step?

Not sure what you mean by "permissions on the key".
Thanks
Go to Start > Run > regedit and click OK.
Navigate to the key that was listed
Right click and choose permissions
You'll see a list of permissions. You'll see a set of users. One should be the name of the user you logged in as, "Administrators", Creator/Owner, System, etc. When you click on the user name, you'll see check boxes checked with what the permissions are for that user.
Does that clarify things?
