Norton Utilities 14.0

I just purchased Norton Utilities 14.0 and ran a registry scan.  To my surprise it found 577 problems with my registry, even though my system seems to be working without a problem.  Considering myself a Master PC novice, would my next step be to make a copy of the registry, click on the Utilities Repair button and see what happens (roll the dice)?  Or does the Utilities program take care of us novice and make safe repairs?

mdturner - Thanks for the reply and suggestion.  Is backing up the registry the same thing as creating a restore point?  When I went to Microsoft.com and typed in "Backing up an XP registry" it just showed how to create a restore point, which is pretty easy to do.

Hi PC_confused

When you create a restore point it does indeed back up the registry as well as lots of other important system files so that in the event you wish to restore it can all be put back in place as it was.

Alternatively you can use the registry editor (regedit) and choose export to export all of the registry settings to a file which can be imported later if you need to.

Moved to the thread of its own for better exposure

One further note here. Norton Utilities can be configured to automatically create a restore point before doing repair.

Click on Administer > Settings and make sure the there is a checkmark on the box next to Create a system restore point before repair.

AllenM - Thank you for your suggestion.  After reading mdturner's suggestions, I went through the Utilities Screens and found that option.  I went ahead and checked it because Murphy's law states "the time you forget to create a restore point, thats the time something bad could happen".  I've set up XP to automatically create a restore point, every so often, but another safeguard shouldn't hurt.
