Norton Utilities 14 on Win XP -- worked once, now won't start

I purchased and installed Norton Utilities and Norton Internet Security.  The Norton Utilities worked once, but now if I click the icon or try to start from the programs menu, it won't start at all.

 

Also, when I installed NU, it sort of uninstalled Norton Internet Security -- it was just gone, after I had installed and activated it.  I reinstalled NIS and it seems fine now.  But NU won't start.

 

I noticed some messages from NU / Win 7 users who had a similar problem, sometimes after a Registry Defrag (which I did).  Is that the problem?
