i have been searching all the norton utilities forums for the answer to my question. i hope i am not making a bad move by
using this old thread and updating it a tad... i downloaded the trial ware for the utilities 14 and all went normally but when i
am asked to activate i do not have a key simply because i did not buy it. am i missing something here? if i click on "activate
later" then i am taken out of the application - BUSTED. i noticed the program is similar to my PC tools Registry Mechanic. could that be the root of the problem? thank you in advance.
thanks for the nice move and the added attention....
i have windows XP SP 3, thirty two bit. as it turned out my dear old machine was being difficult (as it has teended to be lately
just to give me a hard time knowing that i will be dragged kicking and screaming to the windows 7 party).
the trial was just waiting somewhere in the void but it reappeared and i was able to install it and mess around accordingly.
thanks for attempting to figure out my problem(s)
i have become obsessed with fixing every little performance issue and it probably isn't healthy. i just can't leave well enough
alone, but then again, i bet i have learned a bit of info along the way. i need to make up about a week's worth of lost sleep though!

ps that is gr8 news regarding PC Tools. i have their spyware doctor w/antivirus & registry mechanic but prefer Norton over any of the competition. is there any way i can modify my current subscriptions to a comprehensive Symantec product? if i can possibly
contact you off the record i can give you a few more details concerning my version of Security Suite. you guys rock.
Are things OK with Norton Utilities now? Just want to make sure.
About modifying your subscriptions. Unfortunately, even though Symantec took over PC Tools there is no way to modify the subscription to convert to a Norton anti-virus solution if that is what you are wondering.
For comprehensive protection I would recommend either Norton 360 or Norton Internet Security (NIS) for your anti-virus protection. Norton 360 is designed more as a plug and play type of protection where NIS is more customizable so it really depends on what is more important to you. They are both built on the same malware protection technology so they both offer the same comprehensive protection. You can see a comparison of the two here.
Norton 360 also includes some but not all of the tools that is available in Norton Utilities. Personally I prefer the better customization of NIS and Norton Utilities. Norton Utilties is basically an enhanced version of Registry Mechanic (which I used to have before Symantec took over PC Tools) but also has other utilities built in. You can see a list of features of Norton Utilties here.
If you do decide to go with a Norton anti-virus protection, please know that Spyware Doctor must be completely removed as two real-time security products will interfere with each other.
So if you decide to do this I would recommend posting in the NIS forum here so that the community can assist you in making this transition.
