Norton utilities 15 and Defrag not working

Norton Utilites 15 and Window 7 Pro  64 bit.  Everything in Norton Utlities works except Defrag, up until a week ago it was working fine now when you click on Defrag the cursor turns to a circle for about 30 seconds or so an then stops and the defrag window never opens.  I have uninstalled NU 15 and re-installed it to no avail.

Thanks

Jeff

Do you have any other Norton product on that machine?

Yes i have NIS version 18.6.0.29

Please try this method:

1. If you use the feature, please backup your Identity Safe data
2. Download latest Norton Internet Security installer: www.norton.com/nis11 (this is the English one, for other languages please go to the Norton Update Center: www.norton.com/nuc )
3. Download Norton Removal Tool: www.norton.com/nrt

4. Download NU15: www.norton.com/nu15
5. Disconnect from internet
6. Remove Norton Internet Security and Norton Utilities from Start Menu or from Control Panel -> Add or Remove programs
7. Reboot
8. Run the Norton Removal Tool, reboot (repeat it 2-3 times)

9. Install NU15
10. Install Norton Internet Security 2011

11. Reconnect to the internet and activate NIS2011 with your serial
12. Run Live Update in NIS2011 until you get no new updates

13. Run Smart Update in NU15 until you get no more updates
14. Restore your Identity Safe data

I've remover NIS and i had to boot into safe mode to remove NU15, then i rebooted and tried to run Norton Removal tool and the tool states that NU15 must be removed through add/remove in control panel in which i did ...so now i'm stuck with trying to figure out why it says that....i've serched for NU15 and it only shows the install program in my downloads file

At this moment in time i am not happy with norton products, i believe i have wasted my money on a defective product.  If i dont get this fixed soon im gonna delete and demand my money back....

Ok, after using regedit and searching and deleting all norton keys, i could finally run Norton Uninstalling Tool which i did 3 time and rebooted between each run....Now i go to re-download NU15 (because i deleted it when NU removal tool wouldnt run) and of course their friggen server is down......UNBELIEVABLE and i'm gonna trust this software to protect my machine.....un-sure of what i want to do with this company

After all that, it still doesnt work...click on "Defrag" and all i get is my cursor turns to a circle for 30 seconds and then nothing happens...CRAPPY SOFTWARE....definately WILL NOT be recommending this crapware to anybody

Go to Start > Run > services.msc and press OK.  Look for the Norton Speed Disk Service.  Is this service started?  What is the Startup Type?  Click on the Recovery tab.  What are the First failure, second failure, and subsequent failure options set to?  Click on the Log on tab.  What is this set to?

I'd be interested to see if there's a Windows Event log entry as well.  Try the following:

Attempt to start a defrag in Speed Disk

Wait for the hourglass to complete

Go to Start > Run > eventvwr and click OK

Expand Windows Logs

Click on the Application log

Look for any entries where Norton Speed Disk Service is the Source, if you find nothing search the log for items that mention Speed Disk.

Ok....1st fail = Restart service  2nd fail = Take no Action  3rd Fail = Take no Action

its amazing 2 people try to help, they ask me to do different things and I did...I then post what it did and gee...i get no more help...they both dissapear...when my subscription runs out I will NOT be renewing.   This forum is as bad as the software. JUNKWARE.  Symantec you lost me as a customer and I definately will be telling 10 more people my story

Thanks for NOTHING but GREIF

Jeff

I apoligize that I was unable to respond as I have been travelling over the last day and a half.  What is the startup type for the speed disk service?  if it's set to anything but automatic, please change it to automatic.  Also, what is the current state of the Speed Disk service?  If you had to change the startup type and the service is not started, please restart and then check the state again to confirm it's started.  Then try running Speed Disk again.

If all else fails, you might uninstall NU (through add/remove programs) again and reinstall NU.  If it still fails at that point I'd need to get the install log that NU creates in the temp folder.

I I apologize, i had no idea you were traveling. Please except my sincere apologies.  I'm not sure how you change the startup type and what you mean by the current state of the disk service. I'll probably know it once you mention on how to do it.

Thank You Again,

Jeff

:-)

Go to services.msc again and locate the norton speed disk service. Double click it to open properties. You should see the startup type and state. Tge startup type is a drop down menu.

Ok went to services.msc and norton speed disk is and was already set up as Automatic and its state was Started....

Thanks,

Jeff

Try stopping the service, start it, and then try to run it. If that doesn’t make a difference uninstall NU through add/remove only and then reinstall. Check speed disk after that. If it still fails look in temp for a file call Norton Utilities date time.log which will be the install log. I’ll give you email instructions later so you can send it to me.

Ok, tried stopping and restarting then running the service and that didnt work either.  I tried looking for that log that you requested but not sure where to look. Tried a bunch of places and didnt not find it.
