Norton Utilities 16 Defrag Issue

I started a deep defrag using NU16.  It gets to about 85% complete then starts over.  Is anyone else experiencing this?  Any suggestions to fix?

Thanks.

Mike

I am running Utilities 16 and have run the deep defrag on all 3 computers with no problems.

Did you get a message indicating Defrag would remove Windows restore points which might impact other Windows programs any of the time you've run Defrag?  If so, how did you get around that or did you allow Defrag (Quick or Deep) to continue anyhow?  Thanks?

I am a Vista operating system and when I defrag it hangs the computer about 75% through the scan.  Tried repairing disks first and there are no errors.  Then defrag hangs again.

I have turned the scheduler off a couple of times and it turns itself back on.

My system hangs now when the screen saver comes on.  I had to disable the screen saver.

Every day since I loaded it I have tried an update and it says that it has the updated version.

Overall I am now trying to remove this buggy software from my system.

I am also having trouble with Norton Utilities 16.  Every time I start the defragmenter on deep scan I get the blue screen of death and have to shut down the PC and restart.

I saw a quick message which said something about a solid state hard drive which I do not have on my machine.  It is a Dell 9150 running XP service pack 3.

Anyone have any suggestions?  The Norton help section does not seem to have anything to fix.

Hello W-D,

I will suggest trying to run a Repair Drives before doing a defrag. Make sure you scan and fix errors. This should require a reboot. That is what I would try first. The reason being is that the BSOD could have been caused by errors on your hard drive that you were not aware. The next time it happens, I would suggest you also get the complete BSOD error message and post it here so that I could have a look at it.

Hello roarty and everyone,

The reason why this is probably the case is that when performing a defrag you would ideally want to do it before Windows starts up so that the disks are not currently running while completing this process. The reason being is that there could be some problems when defraging some of the data on the disks while it is being used.

This is what I would suggest to try. On the Defragment your Disk (Speed disk) page do the following:

1. Select the Drive you wish to Defrag

2. Select Deep Defrag

3. Select the 'Perform on Reboot tick box

4. Click Continue

5. Restart your computer.

On restart Disk defrag should start running before windowws starts up. Make sure you let defrag complete.

Kind regards,
