Norton Utilities and Windows 7

Hi,all. I've recently installed Windows 7 64 bit. Is Norton Utilities V14 compatible ? I already have Norton Utilities V14, from my XP PRO days. Is it worth installing, as I hear Windows 7 does a pretty good job of looking after itself. Thanks for any tips, Geoff Hickling

Hi, MDT. I already have CCleaner for tidying up cookies etc, but am looking to use NU for fixing registry errors, etc . I was warned by my tech not to use 3rd party utilities, as Windows  7 can be a bit antsy, if it doesn't like what they're doing. It's already been back for a reinstall  after it crashed, due to a problem with a 32 bit program, so I'm a bit hesitant to rock the boat, so to speak. Thanks for your prompt reply. Rgds, Geoff.

Hi Geoff

A number of people have an aversion to Registry Cleaners. Norton Utilities has some very useful features that are worth having, even on a Win 7 system. I have it installed on my Win 7 system but I do not use it to fix registry errors - just my personal preference.

Thanks , MDT. :-) Rgds, Geoff

Hello F4E

What version of NU 14 are you running? According to what AllenM said, your version should be 14.5. Please see this thread for further information on how to upgrade it if you haven't already done this.

Thanks

With Windows 7 64bit, if you don't update it and attempt to optimize the registry it will damage your system.

You will not be able to boot your system and you will have to go into the recovery console and restore the registry from backups.

Make sure it is fully updated before doing anything.

Dave

Sorry, it was doing a registry defrag, not optimize.  Although one usually does both.

Manual recovery is given in post 24 on the 3'rd page
